GREAT NEWS

Post by JimT »

Work is nearing completion on the Computer Center in Pemba, Mozambique. It was damaged by a huge Baobab tree falling on it. The end of the building was partially crushed. Classes will resume in February!

Thank you and Bless you to all who prayed and helped get the building repaired.

Looking at the proportion of new bricks, that baobab did substantial damage.

Great news, Jim! :D
Baobab trees can reach nearly 100 feet in height and around 30 feet in diameter. They have a long life span unless something unusual happens to them. Some are between 2000 and 2500 years old.
Here's a couple photos ... you can see they get large.

In Pemba, Mozambique we often went to a restaurant that had a section with a table and chairs about 15 or so feet up in a big Baobab tree. It was more than 20 feet in diameter at the ground.

Would love to see the menu from that restaurant, Jim.
Looking at the damage photos, the roof trusses seem plenty stout -- but not built to sustain the mass of a baobab tree.
Hopedt o see some in Namibia but the furthest north we got was around Kamanjab, still too far south.

I remember eating there the first time. I ordered a Hamburger with chips (fries). No matter how you ordered a burger, they always came with a fried egg on top of the meat. They were quite tasty.

I saw a few Baobab trees when hunting in South Africa. Very interesting trees.

Thanks for the report. I recall when you first mentioned it. Fried egg on a burger? hmmm not sure about that. But a restaurant in a tree is really neat.
