A Bisley for Pancho

Post by Bill in Oregon »

Villa is said to have had arthritis in his hands, and that he favored the Colt Bisley for its more comfortable grip. Hard to say if he has a Bisley in his hand in this wonderful statue of him just across the border from Columbus, NM, in Puerto Palomas.

Due to the excellent penetrating qualities of the .45 Colt, Villa is said to have lined up 4 or 5 captives at a time and executed them with a single shot when ammunition was in short supply.

Pancho Villa crossed the border
In the year of ought sixteen
The people of Columbus still hear him riding through their dreams
He killed 17 civilians you could hear the women scream
Black Jack Pershing on a dancin' horse was waiting in the wings.
Tonight we ride.

Thanks Jim! I apologize if I repeat myself, but great-great Uncle Tobe Tipton was mayor of Columbus just a couple of years before Villa's raid. Before the troubles, Villa spent time in Texas and New Mexico, including La Mesilla, where we had lunch a couple of days ago. I have always liked this portrait of the handsome rascal -- this one on the wall at the Double Eagle on the old plaza.

I remember the first time I heard that song. It was at the banquet at the Shootists Holiday and I think you and I were sharing a room in the competitors housing that year.

As I recall, that was the year that Rene Broast took her famous blackmail photo.

Yessir! It was the first time I heard also.
I remember the pretty lady who was accompanying the group. Jeff Quinn and I were talking to them and somehow it got mentioned that she and the singer weren't married. Jeff said, "We've got several preachers in The Shootists and we can fix that!" The poor guy looked like a deer caught in the headlights. I just busted out laughing.

I made that drive from Ft Bliss out to Columbus several years ago. It is a small museum but I did enjoy it.
