Drone Acclamation.....

Post by Ray »

News reports claim that suspicious, presumably chinese or north korean drones are buzzing about military bases here and abroad by the hundreds. This is troubling on many levels......

One, they can easily intricately map infrastructure with lasers (lidar) and infrared cameras.

And further, folk can become accustomed to their presence then armed drones can wreak terror and mahem.

This unpleasantness in the ukraine has proved the dangers of armed drones. The horror of them is that the victims see them coming, obviously hovering overhead and simply cannot escape them all the while the operator is seeing the panic in real time from safety far away.

The only way to escape, other than highly technological lasers and jamming waves is a surprise cloud of duck/goose shot and there are videos showing a few drones shot down or exploded before they reach their intended targets but the efficacy of those simple weapons are amazing.

I suspect that drones are the new face of war.

you could counter them with drones designed to take them out. Sort of starwarsish. Not clone wars but drone wars.

Yeah if they stay 100 yards or so up overhead and just do spying, or drop stuff, you’re screwed; no way a ground based shoulder fired weapon can take one out, or a dozen:?

Maybe armed counter-drones with deployable nets, radio jamming, or explosives, but does that mean everyone will transition from packing a handgun, with the more at risk having an armed bodyguard or a long gun, to everyone with two or three defense-drones hovering at all times.

Even in a non-hardened building a drone could be lethal.

No doubt the government will ‘solve’ it by outlawing unlicensed civilian drone possession - that way no bad guys or Chinese spies or assassins would have them… (just like is the case now with full auto weapons)…🙄

Pretty scary in terms of public security.

The videos purported to be from ukraine are absolutely horrible to watch if they are indeed real and not made-up. Often, a solitary human target is singled-out and he-she-it attempts to flee to no avail as the drone is apparently faster than even an auto-vehicle. The camera perspective looms closer and closer as the target panics then the moving image ceases apparently at the device's detonation.

Obviously these are the one-use drones and not the ones that hover and drop a payload and can return behind the lines to be re-used. It is these one-use drones that can be shot-down by small-arms gunfire before detonation. The ones (on videos) I've seen disabled, there are one or more defenders who step out from concealment at nearly the last moment before impact and hit the device enough to either divert direction of flight or cause the explosive to detonate prematurely. A squad of soldiers would need at least two experienced wing-shots armed with fowling pieces with magnum duck/goose/swan sized shot and an element of surprise to be undetected by the camera. Like mentioned, the higher altitude devices would have to be hit by rifle fire and that is obviously a small, flitting, moving target.
