alliant 2400?

Post by 1894cfan »

Just got notice from Midway that 2400 is no longer available-limited production. Got enough of it but it's kinda a staple with me. What have you guys heard about this?

Gunpowders based on nitrocellulose like Alliant and others are being sold under contract to the military and are becoming increasingly unavailable on the commercial market.

All Alliant powders seem to have become extinct since Alliant can't get nitrocellulose anymore.

That's my go-to powder for 357 Mag.

What else are folks using under a 158 gr. JHP?

Mine as well…..for over 40 years. I’m not sure what I am going to do when I run out.

My go-to powder for .357 also. However, H110/296 is still available, AA7, AA9, HS-6, CFE Pistol and Enforcer are all good choicees at the moment.

I use 2400 in most of my Hunting Revolver cartridges, and down loaded ammo for pleasant days plinking. I did pick up a Good supply of HS-6 that I will start using for lighter hitting play loads, and save my 2400 for hunting loads.

Unfortunately the powders I find that are great like 2400 are also now tough to get also. I've had good results with Green Dot and Red Dot shotgun powders in my .357 Mag, but if you don't already have some it's not around now.

Two or three component droughts ago I got down to just under a pound of 2400 (unique too) and I found these.....

Since then I found 4 lbs. of 2400 and 8 lbs. of unique and you can be sure I was relieved to have done so when the news arrived of the ukraine caused indefinite cessations.

I just called one of my favorite haunts and they had an 8 pound jug of 2400 that they are putting aside for me.

Hopefully after the election things might change back again.

For those of you who have enough and just found more...I am VERY happy for you! May you keep on reloading to your hearts content and have enough ammo loaded to suit whatever you want/need it for! Keep on keeping on.

I was unaware of that. 2400, Unique, and Bullseye covered all my handgun needs for years.

That’s exactly the problem. With those three, I covered all the bases.

I've been using VV N110 and a quick internet search does show it's available.
I know a whole lot about very little and nothing about a whole lot.

Vhitavuori N110 is good, Vhi website gives 357 loads. Vhi N105 is said to be virtually identical to 2400 but I've not used it.
Lovex powders known as Worldpowders in the US D036,D037.1 and D037.2 all do Hi V or plink loads for my 357 M92.

Im a bit tired of these so called shortages. Covid was one thing, now its a war between two ex soviet dumps, neither even a top 10 world economy and we have runaway inflation across the world and more shortages? We pay double for a lot of things now and the worlds wealthiest all just doubled their net worth. How about that coincidence

The Chinese abruptly announced about three weeks ago that they were stopping exports to the US of antimony and nitrocellulose. They were the primary suppliers of those products, which are necessary for the production of powder and primers. There are smaller suppliers, but with China out of the picture, and a lot of powder being used in ammunition that is going overseas, I don't think we'll see things get better anytime soon.

This is the foreseeable consequence of the current administration’s constant talk of war.

Well Nitrocellulose is produced in large qty's also in Europe thailand and india so hopefully they can swtich to that. Powder is a tiny fraction of nitrocellulose market besides, vast majority is used for paints, plastics, inks, sprays.

Just googled China exports the most Antimony yes but Tajikistan produces almost as much. ....also Vietnam, Peru, Mexico, Oman combined beat china combined, all trading partners with the US. maybe a good thing letting china go.
