I quit watching and reading the news about 15 years ago.

Post by JimT »

I get enough of it (sometimes too much) through what people email, text and posts on forums. I read this the other day. Written about 3000 years ago, it can be applied to much of the "News" that is broadcast and published today!

A wicked scoundrel wants to dig up dirt on others, only to spread slander and shred their reputation. A twisted person spreads rumors; a whispering gossip ruins good friendships.

I agree, Jim. Although I do watch a couple of news stories on my computer which in itself is a corruption of my time, I gave up on television years ago.

In the UK the BBC requires a $219.39 licence a year to watch any live channel TV, I refuse to pay for government propaganda so I stopped watching TV some years ago.

John, that crazy TV licensing scheme you have to live with in the UK is nuts. First time I heard of it, my reaction was "Are you kidding me?"
My college degree was in print journalism, and while I miss having a real newspaper to read in the mornings over coffee, I read my news on my Mac -- Reuters, Associated Press, New York Times, The Hill, The Bulwark, the Texas Tribune -- and listen on my radio to KACU for the Texas Standard, etc. When you have it in your blood ...

ABC, CBS, PBS, FOX, NBC, CNBC - all of the alphabet soup networks are just propaganda.
All of the content has been edited and massaged for your consumption.
The BBC, IMHO, is not QUITE as bad, but their reputation has slipped as well in recent years.

A shout out to The New Yorker for being factual. It is said that if The Empire State Building is
mentioned in a prospective article, someone will run out and check that it's still standing before
publication.

That kind of integrity is virtually impossible to find in the mass (TV) media these days.

You've got to dig if you want facts, and that takes time.

I do not have cable/tv in my home. I have a tv that I could watch movies, but rarely do. I have found that it makes me much happier and my mind is clearer, and not filled with distraction that keeps my mind off God.

I quit 35 YEARS ago! Even back then I could see that they were giving only the info THEY wanted us to see! Heck, even the weather reports were suspect! If I wanted to know what the weather was going to be like I'd just walk out and look at the sky.

Good lesson Jim. It’s mostly either propaganda or gossip. Or it’s a combination thereof.

Yup. I have subscribed to this all my adult life. About twenty years ago I found a newspaper on my front step. I called the local "propaganda distribution center" and notified them of their error. About a week later, another paper appeared. This time I got in the truck and hand carried it to the "office of state propaganda". This time, I made it clear I would press charges of trespassing if the offense occurred again. That seemed to do the trick.

IMO, to purchase a "newspaper" or to watch "TV news" is to accept what is being foisted on you. No matter how much you may disagree, you have purchased and therefore financed its continuation. You have given legitimacy to the process. If everyone ignored it, their power would be taken away. They dont care if you scream at the TV or burn the paper. Their mission has been accomplished.

We stopped watching the news also. And I avoid discussion of many news headlines that only infuriate me. I want to enjoy life now, and not let things get my blood pressure up.

I believe you have to keep up on some things going on in the country and the world. You don’t have to be a news junky. The local news is worthless as around here the first half is how many people got shot in Philly but I do like to know what’s going on in the world.

Is there anyone here who does not know about the attempted murder of Trump or how millions of illegals are entering our country or that Muslims attacked Israel? If you say you don’t watch the news you should say, “I never heard about those things” but I bet no one can honestly say that those three items are new to them.

Yes, it’s all propaganda but not hard propaganda like it was in Nazi times……it just has a twist to it to sway people’s minds their way. A smart person can see through it and make their own decisions.

Just like my posts that most people don’t like you can turn the tv off or you can click on another post. I prefer to have the choice.

If there was no news the power hungry people would be doing anything they liked and no one would know about it. You want a knock at the door and there’s 50 Mexicans there saying they have the right to live with you? By watching the news you would know in advance to load up your 30 round mags.

TV is no different than any other invention, you can use it to your benefit or you can be swayed by it, IF your weak minded.

I quit watching TV news on September 13, 2001, after the realization that every newscast of the past two days -- EVERY ONE -- had been either speculation, creative fiction or an outright lie. I realized that the news organizations, like the political parties, while not preaching the same message, were all nonetheless giving us lies in a clear effort to confuse us and hide the truth.

Just as with lying politicians (all), you know a lying newscaster by one fact -- his mouth is moving.

I think I disagree with the position that what we see is not “hard propaganda” like back in the old days.

I can’t square that with all of the media being involved in the Russia, Russia, Russia! lies.

Yep. And, Six, it was Tuesday the following week before a friend asked me what I thought about Trump getting shot. 1st time I'd heard about it. The stereo in my truck only plays CDs... music, somewhat eclectic choices... but hey, they're my choices! To me, the problem with the "getting the news" argument, is that if you know they are lying, what part do you believe?
The problem with propaganda is that everyone thinks THEY are immune to it. Somehow they are different than the masses, and they can discern the "truth" parts from the lies. They choose the parts they want to hear as truth, and the parts they don't as the lies.
Nobody is immune. It's an effective tool that is used against us every day. The proof is in the fact that so few people can control so many in this country by the use of the division everyone sees.

Everyone complains about the media but continually legitimize them by participating in their game.

I am interested in history, even if I hate the way it's going . . . so the history channel over the air tv is a staple. They are hosting Forged in Fire, which is run as a marathon one day per week on the history channel, now called "Story".

I can occasionally catch a baseball game on tv, and softball and little league games. One of the things about base ball is I can mute the bloviators. I love the game and it blesses me to watch. Why? IDK. Perhaps because I was nursed in Wrigley Field?

I quit the nfl when they started worshiping the marxist flag. Loved watching Joe Cool over ratnet in Alaska, back when it was about the game.

I hate to distraction the lying liars. BIG BUT, everyone of them is a tool of the devil. They are created in the image of God, He created their souls, and He loves them enough to die for them. T.V. is a complete unabridged prayer list of the people most in need of the Truth they deny. They are already destined to spend eternity in hell, [John 3:18], so this is a perfect way to be in God's perfect will, to pray for those souls to HEAR the Gospel and be converted to the Truth, because God is not willing that any should perish.

I learned to do this when I realized that my anger wasn't affecting 'them'. I am so dense and slow that it took me YEARS to figure out how to pray for Barak the Liar.

Christ commands this --> [Matthew 5:43-48]. It's perplexing until I remember that Christ died to save sinners like me. We are charged with loving 'them' the way that Christ did.

Well, it's Sunday, so I guess a little Word isn't out of place, eh?

You are right Grizz.
The real problem is that each side of the division can't see the other side as they see themselves. For one side to "win", the other has to "lose". Any loss is a loss to all. The real evil are the ones in control. All of them. Not just one side or the other.

Well I'd like to chime in here. I gave up on ALL news January of 2021. I mean ZERO. Of course, its impossible not to hear snippets here and there (doctors office, etc), but I do the best I can. I even configured my start page on my computer so when I log in it goes immediately into my email, bypassing yahoo's 'news page'. As a result I found out about Russia/Ukraine about 1 1/2 months after it started (I thought the 'pray for Ukraine" signs I saw on the local churches (I guess they dont care about Russian grunts dying) was perhaps about an earthquake or something), and more recent, first heard about the attempt on Trump on a Tuesday, 3 days after it happened. I have a tv but only watched, in the last 3 years, the bicycle races on Peacock (Tour de France, etc), and some old movies I buy on eBay, movies made when a married couple meant a man and a wife.....you get my gist. The old me would be embarrassed about my lack of news awareness, the new me has never been happier! Seriously, my friends notice how I am always happy and chipper! To all who think you need to keep informed via the news, believe me you can be very very happy without it. Admittedly it is easier now that I am retired as I dont have to listen to the sheep at work spout out their take on the news, but if I wasn't retired I certainly would still do all I could to avoid the news. Now I plan on hunting, shooting and reloading until they take them away, riding my bike until I physically no longer can, observing the stars through my telescope until age limits that. In other words I am living and enjoying my life without the news. My 2 cents on it
