Accurate #9

Post by Walt »

I have been looking around locally for AA9 but had been unable to find any at Sportsman's and Cabela's. My shooting partner said he went into Cabela's last week and bought a pound of AA9 but when I went in they said they didn't have any and couldn't remember ever having any. Big box store; one hand has no idea what the other hand is doing. I looked around online and Graf and Sons had some so I ordered 4 pounds of it. I really like it for stout loads in .357 and .41 mag.

I have some fairly heavy .357 loads loads using Military Surplus AA#9. I shot a bunch of them at the CSA in April from my Model 92 Rossi levergun. The accuracy made me look like a decent shot! They functioned well through the levergun. I have them loaded with the Saeco 160 gr. SWC.

An "oldy but goody" powder for sure! Lots of applications. Quick Load had two different powder data upgrades this year. So far I only have one of them as I prefer them on disc in case this old laptop dies. Its very encouraging to see the Quick Load data boycott from powder manufacturers dissipate. They finally figured out they sold MORE powder when they released the data to QL, not less. Go figure! -Tutt

I'm hoping some of the Alliant ball powders show up soon in QL. Actually, I was looking for Steel but I'm not sure if that's in the ball category or not. I think Promo is still flake. Not sure about Pro Reach either.

I agree though, I have on hand about 119lbs of various powders and exactly 5lbs of which does not appear in QuickLoad. And 3lbs of that is that 300MP which we've discussed previously. I'm very unlikely to buy a powder that isn't in QL.

Rihm, thank you for understanding past differences. I think you understand the program better than I do, and Earl too. I still have a serious use for it coming up, I just don't have a reloading bench right now, but that will change hopefully this year, and mean while, I have a very knowledgeable friend who can help me hand-load and test loads. Your truly a gentleman and I am grateful for you being here as very few members know about QL or how to use it. So thanks Pard! You educate me too!

-Tutt or Andy, you can always refer to me as either.

The Hornady handbook 9th edition shows AA9 to be head and shoulders over anything else in the.327 Federal Magnum.

I’m thinking about trying some.

I love #9 in my 357 Sig. With 125 gr bullets a max charge provides a perfectly compressed load to prevent setback, which can be a big problem in the 357 Sig with its extremely short neck. Velocity is out of this world too. I get well over 1400 fps with 125 gr bullets. Factory loads don't approach that. That's real 357 Magnum performance in a 4" barrel semi auto. Pretty comfortable carrying that around with 14 rounds in my gun and a spare mag.

I've used AA9 in 44 Magnum. I didn't shoot but a pound of it, and it was ok. I seemed to gravitate to W296 and stayed with it, I have no complaints.

Ted, that 357 Sig sounds pretty neat. I've had my eye on that cartridge for a while now. Another firearm opportunity came up and I had to jump on it as it was going to be sold out from under me if I waited too long. So I'm broke for a while, but impressive cartridge. -Tutt
