Re: What Are You Hunting with Your Levergun...
Hogs mostly with my 44 mag rossi lever 20" stainless barrel version. Its actually my only centrefire these days. And I dont use cast in it either, 240gn xtps at 1800fps_ works on even the largest hogs I have shot. I also tried Hornady custom ammo and the 200xtp load chronos an even 2000fps from my rifle. I have pushed shots to 135yards with this load. One smaller hog I shot at close range, the 200 grain must have lost its jacket as I had multiple exits broadside on that hog. It was a bit of an eye opener. Do you call that a failed bullet if more than one piece still passes right through the animal.
Re: What Are You Hunting with Your Levergun...
Parker DH 8 I mentioned earlier in this thread came thru on a straggler spike shooting an early thirties vintage factory shell it held 1 3/4 ounces of 0 Buck . Little guy came by at twenty yards so I let him have it behind the shoulder and he ran straight towards my tree and died 15 feet from the base of it . The third picture was taken from the tree moments after I shot him . When I skinned him it was quite evident the majority of the buckshot hit him and I was able to recover one pellet on the offside in the hide .

I spent this season with my Winchester 94 in 375 Win. Despite seeing a number of deer I ended the season empty handed. My go to load, which has accounted for deer in the past, is 30 gr of Reloder 7 over 265 gr cast Lyman GCFP.

It varies from where I am.
When you shoot the first one then you get to shoot these. Today these

Good to see a few folks have taken game this year.
Only a few days left for rifle season here. I'm having fun, but no meat yet.

Re: What Are You Hunting with Your Levergun...
A couple of weeks ago my wife and I drove to OKC to visit our daughter and her family. Our son and his little family drove up from DFW and we had a chance to visit with them as well. I gave our son a Henry lever action in .357 because he had joined a deer lease group in an area about an hour south of Lubbock. The group is obligated to bring a certain number of whitetails and a few mule deer out of the lease area (about 7000 acres, I think) every year and he thought it would be fun to carry a lighter gun than the bolt actions with which he normally hunts. He has shot pigs with a .45-70 guide gun with my jacketed loads before as well as with a 4" Redhawk with my cast 300 gr loads.
He went out to the deer lease yesterday and took along the Henry. I suspect he thought the .357 was a bit puny for pigs and maybe for whitetails as well. The loads I made up for him were 158 gr Hornady XTP hollowpoints, these rated to expand from 700 to 1400 fps. They were loaded to about 1780 fps muzzle velocity. I'm also guessing he wanted to try it out on a pig before using it to take a whitetail. He told me he laid out on the ground and had whitetail bucks and does come within 10 yards of him. He also had a pig wander to about 40 yards away and he blasted it. The pig made it about 10 yards before expiring. That hollowpoint made an exit wound about an inch in diameter, pushing out a wad of bright lung material.
I don't think he has any further reservations about taking whitetails and also mule deer with that gun and load.

Is that Ranch Dog mould a solid, or did it come with hollowpoint pins? I see NOE still catalogs it, and I am a fan of the Ranch Dog moulds, the 32-20 bullets is amazingly accurate!

I used the RD 432-265GC in both solid and HP to kill deer . I have the RD made Lee 6 cavity solid and a NOE RD 432-265GC HP mold . But when I used them it was in several 444’s .High Desert Hunter wrote: ↑Sun Dec 01, 2024 10:44 amLevergunner,LeverGunner wrote: ↑Fri May 10, 2024 10:48 pm I'll probably go after Whitetail this year with my Winchester 92 in 44 Magnum. Re: What Are You Hunting with Your Levergun...
I'm looking for a slick feeding bullet with decent weight for the 44 Mag that I can comfortably shoot from my Super Blackhawk as well. I ran this one through after casting a few from a new NOE mould:
Dave
Left is the tried and true 429421, right is the NOE 434-258-SWC-AA4. It has a slightly shorter nose that seems to feed OK from my Marlin 1894 Classic.Dave

Re: What Are You Hunting with Your Levergun...
Ranch Dig made a 432-240GC mold that did very well . If you can scrape up a mold for that one it may suit your needs .High Desert Hunter wrote: ↑Sun Dec 01, 2024 1:07 pm I'm looking for a slick feeding bullet with decent weight for the 44 Mag that I can comfortably shoot from my Super Blackhawk as well. Thanks Amigo! I like the 240-260 weight range for a general all-around 44 bullet, a caliber I shunned for a good many years because of the 45 Colt.

Howdy Dave, Mine is an original Ranch Dog, so it's solid only.High Desert Hunter wrote: ↑Sun Dec 01, 2024 10:44 amLevergunner,LeverGunner wrote: ↑Fri May 10, 2024 10:48 pm I'll probably go after Whitetail this year with my Winchester 92 in 44 Magnum.
