Blued steel and walnut

I really appreciate the lines on these older guns.

Although I love me some stainless and plastic when it comes to an all-weather gun, and the black nitrided functionality of an AR or Glock is practical, the aesthetics of a finely designed blued-steel gun with nice walnut 'furniture' is amazing.

I think the original S&W Model 29 would be one of the timeless masterpieces in that genre.

In the rifle department, many vintage leverguns would qualify, as would others, but perhaps my favorite blued-steel-and-walnut one is a Ruger M-77 from the 1970's.

Those are some beauties. I have always found the short barrel Smiths to be particularly attractive in the way the underlug is stopped. My wife likes full underlug... me not so much.

It's an unusual pistol for sure. I've had several over the years, but this one would be difficult to upgrade. It's all matching in near perfect condition with Finn proof marks. The holster is a British style reproduction. The original Finn holsters are just about nonexistent.

I was about 18 or so when I got my first one. A mismatched, Chinese import that had been rode hard and put away wet. There was just a hint of rifling left in the bore but the beat up old pistol still functioned perfectly and was a surprisingly good shooter. One day I decided to take it apart to make sure it was really cleaned out or any corrosive residue. Took me hours to put it back together! I've never taken another one apart.

I am corrosive to blue steel, if I am sweating just a little and handle a blued steel firearm it will have rust within a couple of days if I don't wipe it off. CEROKOTE, ROBAR, and Stainless are my friends.

My favorite is blued steel and elephant ivory. …..back around 40 years ago, elephant ivory was cheap….$100 bucks would get you a form fitted set of ivory stocks……..my first set for a Colt 1911 was $36 in 1976……..later Colt SAA’s were a buck and a half.

We all have preferences and I have come to accept mine; I simply can't abide a stainless gun. The only one I own is an old S&W 637 and I Gun-coated the frame black and the barrel & cylinder with Caswell's 360. The lock on that one was deactivated shortly after I bought it.

By far most of my guns are blued steel and walnut; The remaining ones reside in the back of my safe. I hate to spoil a great view.
