Tales of MHB. Mounted Inspector, Treasury Dept.

Post by 2ndovc »

Stopped by my dad's place the other day. He hasn't left for FL yet for a couple reasons and while staying out of the cold, he's been going through some stuff he'd been putting off.
Along with some other old papers he gave me the letter below from the Treasury Dept. asking my grandfather to resign due to budget cuts in 1927.
I thought some of you guys might find it interesting.

My grandfather left home at 14. Went to Cleveland and got a job on on the railroad as a fireman, then ended up in Naco, AZ as a Prohibition officer. He was issued a 1917 Colt and a mule assigned a partner and headed off to patrol the Arizona border.
As far as I know, this is the only picture we have of his days on the border. My grandfather is on the right, holding the 99 Savage.

Hoping my dad comes up with some more of this stuff.

Jason, that is simply fascinating. You are blessed to have that letter and photo in your "archives." Thanks for sharing.

It's kind of amazing what you find out from old papers. My maternal grandfather was a China Sailor. We knew that but didn't know he was decorated there. We thought he just went to Pearl after that, but as it turned out he ended up in Nicaragua during the 1928 banana war. Turned out sailors had books showing every assignment or ship with the date they signed in and out and signed by the officer on duty. His complete navy history from his enlistment at 16 to his passing in 1942.

Pretty neat story. I could listen to those old stories all day long. I notice he has a deer tied on the mule. I guess that they had
hunt for their food while on the job? I bet he had some interesting times down on the border in those days.

Cool family history, that "last in first out rule" although sounds fair it is not always the best way to keep an efficient team.
Great photo.

That would be cool. The other man in the picture's name was George Parker my grandfather's partner while he was in AZ.

I attended a large family reunion of my maternal Grandmother's family in NZ in 2000, held over the weekend of my GGGrandfather's 200th birthday. The organizing committee had done a superb job of identifying slightly more than 5,000 of his descendents at the time of the reunion, at the official "Dinner", over 1500 attended. A book on the history of the family since immigration to NZ was commissioned and delivered in 2001, along with an updated family tree. I've since added my maternal Grandfather's side of the tree, and both my birth father and step father's tree as much as I've been able to find, nearly all back to that same 1800 time frame, now totaling 7414 names. Anything further would require a trip to the UK, or hiring a professional researcher. It appears that the family mostly originated in England, Scotland or Ireland as far as I'm able to tell. Although, I've found one ancester than immigrated to the US thru the Netherlands, but haven't found anything regarding him prior to his boarding a ship bound for the US in Rotterdam. I've found some conflicting information among family researchers, and try to stick to what I can actually document. The oral history I heard as a kid growing up, differs wildly from the documented facts, some of which were tough to dig out. Some will probably remain in mystery as GGGreatgrandfather's widow wrote in her memiors that she burned all her husband's family records and correspondence as "no one needs to know"... There are apparently very few actual records of a James Hayter Jackson born in Putney, England in November, 1800.

Griff, the burning of records puts a real stop on things. It's a complete dead end, an erasure of history. A house fire in the 1930s destroyed a lot of stuff on my Mom's side.
