shot until I got rained out. And no, I am NOT complaining about the rain.

I had put a new front sight on the 1851 and needed to sight it in. Shooting 20 yards, I found it was hitting at foot + low so I got my file out and went to work. I cut the front sight until I had it hitting just above the POA with the heaviest powder charge .. 22 gr. of Triple 7.

I cleaned the cylinder of any unburned paper from the cartridges after every firing.

It was overcast and sprinkling during the shooting so I did not get to see how accurately I can shoot it. That will come later. But it show promise!

I am a bit surprised at how much paper remains unburned; these are the cigarette papers, right?

Yes. I have used the darker papers and they all act about the same.

What is the granulation on Triple 7 Jim? I've never used it.
The one I bought is FFFg - John Taffin has done extensive testing with it and others. He says it gives the highest velocities of all the available powders including Black Powder. And it the loads are accurate.

No. Check MidwayUSA ... Powder Valley ... I bought mine from Powder Valley was about $35 ... Natchez Shooters Supply or MidSouth Shooters Supply are good to check. What I do is get a couple guys who want powder to go in with me .. you can order quite a lot of powder and only pay one HazMat fee. Keeps the price down. Also every now and then Powder Valley or Natchez has an offer where if you order a certain amount, they eat the HazMat fee.
Grafs has extended its no-hazmat offer through September 21 -- but you have to order $150 or more worth of powder/primers. I will confirm that percussion caps qualify as well and if so, will order in some Swiss, some Triple Seven and some caps in the morning.
I used triple seven when I had a Uberti 1849 pocket pistol to squeeze a bit more velocity out of it. No chronograph but I did notice a small difference.
I'm getting real tired of waking up and not going hunting....

The Grafs no-hazmat sale does in fact include black powder and percussion caps. Just ordered two pounds of Triple Seven, two pounds of Swiss and a tin of RWS 1075s.

While I always feel a little guilty using 777 (vs. a LOT guilty using Pyrodreck) instead of real black, it does typically improve velocity and energy, it is easily cleaned up and it doesn't leave smelling faintly of rotted eggs for the rest of the day. It's a bit safer to store around the house, too.
