First Indiscretion of 2023

Post by 6pt-sika »

Well I think I did pretty well by almost making it four months without a purchase . However I walked in the shop Thursday sat down and got started loading some slightly lower pressure 12 gauge 0 buck loads for a friend to use in a Parker VH . While sitting there our youngster gunsmith asked me if I’d seen the Parker someone brought in Tuesday , I replied no what is it . He said 12 gauge Trogan which doesn’t exactly set me on fire . Then he says it’s a two barrel set in a case . So I walked out and looked at it . All numbers matched and the fonts looked the same which made me think it may have initially left the factory with both barrels . Gun also has a Miller single selective trigger , which isn’t a big selling point to me but some folks like them . I know the fellow that was selling it , I’d actually sold him the Browning Superposed 410 skeet gun I had . So I asked my gunsmith buddy to send him an offer , to be honest the price on it wasn’t bad but I’ve kinda gotten stingy in my old age lols ! Anyway he emailed the gentleman and a couple hours he responded in a positive way so I brought it home .

The case that came with the gun says Edw. K Tryon which I’ve been told was a rather large sporting goods store in Philly . I was also informed that they were a rather large seller of Parker shotguns . As to the doctor I’ve not tried to figure out who he was or is . Suppose I oughtta order a Parker letter .

Incidentally I failed to mention the barrels are 30” and 26” . With a Galazan flat choke gauge they show the 30” as M&F and the 26” as M&M . I checked the gun out on pine cones in the front yard Friday . Wanted to make sure the safety worked and that the gun didn’t double regardless of which barrel the trigger was set to fire first . And I might add it passed .

At present I have three Parker two barrel sets this 12 Trogan , a 12 VH with 28 and 32 barrels and last and my most favorite a Grade 0 top lever hammer 10 gauge with factory 26 and 30 barrels . Kinda Intresting story the VH 12 was ordered by a guy in Charlottesville Virginia thru Griffon and Howe back around 1920 . The guy in Charlottesville got it new . A lady in Charlottesville brought it in the shop a few years back while I was in the Philippines consigned it and I got back a week or two later . It was priced at $500 so I bought it no questions asked . Gun was well used so I had both barrels blued and the stock had ridiculous drop that matched the letter . Sadly I dropped the action stock out of the vice and broke it clean in the wrist so when my stock buddy fixed it I also had him fix the drop now it’s about 1 1/4” comb 2 1/8” at the heel . The few times I’ve shot it with the 32” tightly choked barrels it’s been lights out for both clay and feathered targets .

I'd really like to find a 20 ga, 26" with open chokes. I think my Parker flushing pheasants for me to shoot with a Parker would be the most enjoyable thing!

I’ve got a VHE 20 26” with a Parker single trigger that’s IC/M that I’m taking to Sanford for a friend to decide if they want . If they don’t I’ll let you know ! I’m also taking my DHE 20 30” M&F straight grip gun to dangle in front of someone .

Sorry to have to tell you the VHE 20 26” left my possession in NC also the DHE 20 30” . So I’m down to a single 20 a VH 20 32” . And the 32” will stay in my possession for awhile . I sold a DH 16 2 frame 32” that i shoot well kinda wish I hadn’t but when I move I don’t wanna leave to many here in a safe .

The week went well ! I abstained from buying anything . And I sold my last Parker 8 gauge hammer , a MacFarlane 10 gauge double ML , the Trogan 2 barrel set I just acquired , my DH 16 gauge 2 frame 32” , the DHE 20 gauge 0 frame 30” and the VHE 20 gauge 0 frame 26” as well as 3k in gunpowder . It’s quite u usual for me to return home with a pocket full of money rather than tapped out !!!

Sad to say I shot only 158 targets the whole time as I didn’t feel so great while down there . Thursday I shot 48 on the course with a Parker Grade 1 top lever hammer 10 gauge and tied for 2nd a single target behind first but I was long runner out of second . Friday in the am I shot two rounds of 8 gauge five stand thirty targets each . The first for score with my Parker DH 8 and the second with a friends LC Smith Grade 2 8 gauge , shot 21 with both guns strangely enough as that was the first time I’d fired a Smith 8 . Then Friday afternoon I shot 50 targets in the prelim of the Parker Smith Challenge . So 48 plus 60 plus 50 turned out to be 158 total .

I hadn’t planned on going to Hausemanns in early June , but the AH Fox Collectors Assoc puts on a Bo-Whoop game and this year they’re planning g on adding an 8 gauge event to the festivities . I’m contemplating going and take four guns . 10 gauge hammer and hammerless to shoot on the course . 8 gauge for that event and my VHE 12 vent rib 32” for the Bo-Whoop and maybe the main event on Saturday !

I am planning on doing the Northern SxS at RockMountain in late July and the Vintage Cup in early September . Both will have 8 gauge events .

Bo-Whoop is an event that the AH Fox collectors Assoc put together each year at Hausemanns Hidden Hollow Sporting Clays “Northeastern Side by Side” each year in June . Hausemanns and Rock Mountain are in the Poconos /Susquehanna , they’re within fifteen miles of each other . The name Bo-Whoop is in reference for what Nash Buckingham called his two Bert Becker bored AH Fox HE 12 gauge 32” guns that both had 3” chambers .
