Purging the Cloud

Post by AJMD429 »

.
I'm patient of mine just got a new iPhone or iPad or something, and said that when the store set it up for her they offered to take everything off of her old phone, including photos, so of course she said go ahead. Now she tells me that when she goes on the internet with any of her other computers the photos start showing up, and she realized they are now in the cloud. That wasn't happening before, so she's pretty sure that they weren't in the cloud before, and she had always selected no when her phone offered to back up her photos that way. She had been backing them up onto a computer manually with a little flash drive.

Her question to me, since there were some medical and private photos she had on there, is there a way that she can get those erased from the cloud? I don't know anything about that, but would assume that if they are taking and put some place into a Shepherd account linked to her that somehow she should be able to access that and delete them. The picture she has really aren't pornographic particularly but they do involve some skin cancers on part of her that would be covered by a bikini, and she prefer those not to be anywhere other than in her physical possession.

When all of those celebrity personal and intimate and lewd fotos and vids. were leaked about seven years ago a particular actress spent just over a million $ to get them zapped at the search engine level and currently pays (so she says) a geek $75,000 a year to keep zapping. The fotos are still out there but at least they don't come up on an "images" search until several pages down. So the answer is yes if well-off but they can keep appearing if some bug has downloaded them.

Am not going to say name but jen----- law------ and "rear view" will give you an idea of keywords..... and leave content filter on moderate lest you get too much information.

Apple devices are very incestuous, every device you have on a common iCloud account has intimate contact with each other.

She needs to go to iCloud account, which is what every device to sharing to and start deleting from there.

On the good side of things, Apple has a "walled garden".

Unless she has lax security on her Apple iCloud login, her images (and everything else) are confined only to her personal devices.

Thats one of the problems with Apple products! I despise apple.
I recently got a new Samsung, the store transferred all my stuff , it took almost 2 hours for all the pics but they are not out in cyberspace!

Not just Apple.
Apple, Samsung, Google, AT&T et. al. all want to back your information up to their cloud.
I don't let any of them do it, yet items still find their way....

Log in to each cloud, delete and disable!

androids are google. they own your stuff. i don't log into any of the cloud traps. and i don't use their browser. you can actually make your own cloud but it's a pia and takes time to set up, but you can sync all your devices on your own hard drive if you want to....

When you let the store migrate you to a new Apple device, the way they do it is they turn on the cloud backup to send everything up and then pull it down to your new device. You can do it yourself from device to device and avoid the cloud backup but in the store, they will pump all of your stuff up to Apple. At some point, I expect Apple will stop allowing device to device direct transfers just so they can get a copy of everything you have. When I did mine, the direct method blew up my playlists, but everything else went over just fine.

I despise Google as well but the reason I really hate Apple is they would not bill me a yearly fee for the basic storage. $.99/ month. I fought with them to bill my for the whole year but they said they couldn't do that. So if I didn't use my CC for other purchases I'd have to write a check for $.99!
Not to mention their batteries sucked in the cold, not water resistant so I switched to Samsung.

I have a bigger bone to pick with Google. I never set my phone up for "cloud storage". Then a couple of years ago probably when I upgraded to a Pixel 3a the new new phone downloaded a ton of photos I had taken on older phones. It also dredged up contacts from a decade or more ago. The latter noise at best. The former shouldn't be a problem but what a pain.

I'm so hopelessly behind on this. When I bought a new iMac last summer, I used the "migration assistant" to move my stuff from my old 2009 mac, and darn if only a small number of my photos moved to my new devices. (I had bought an iPad and iPhone last spring.)
I know about as much about this stuff as I do crypto mining on the blockchain for NFTs. Huh?
