The critiques by the 'fact checkers' are so flawed it is amazing. But the 'news' media never bothers to 'fact-check' the 'fact' checkers...
As one who spent years in college reading and critiquing medical journals, I can say that for sure many journal articles (especially in the 'prestige' journals like New England Journal of Medicine and the media-worshiped ones like Journal of the American Medical Association or the American Academy of Pediatrics), the methodologic flaws are often so tremendous as to completely eliminate any possibility of a rational 'conclusion'. Thorp's paper has its 'flaws' but at least it isn't fabricated like much of what's in Lancet and some of the others that have gotten caught.
