One Proud Papa

Post by Ysabel Kid »

My daughter is a junior in nursing at Clemson. Last summer, towards the end of her break, she tells her Mom and I that she is interested in joining... the US Navy!

Now, I must admit my first thought was "there is no way you are quitting college!". But that wasn't it at all. She found that the Navy has a "Navy Nurse Candidate Program". About 3,000 people apply each year and they only take about 65. She is interested in becoming a nurse anesthetist eventually, and thought the Navy would be a great way to serve her country, gain valuable experience, and if she likes it, they will pay for her schooling if she stays in. So she applied, filled out a mountain of paperwork, and did the interviews. And then we waited.

In December she was informed that she was selected for the program! She'll finish up at college (and get a stipend while doing so), then take her nursing certification exam (the NCLEX). Once she passes she's off to ODS (Officer Development School) and upon graduation will be commissioned as an officer (O-1/Ensign) in Rhode Island.

She's home for Christmas break, so Wednesday we drove up to Raleigh where she completed all the paperwork and took the oath. Officially she is now an E-5, deferred - and a member of the greatest Navy that the world has ever had!

I'm so proud!!! :D :D :D Of course, all her direct ancestors were US Army, so they are probably spinning in their graves.

P.S. - my daughter and I share a sense of humor. She has informed me that she now expects me to salute her, as she outranks me.

That's quite an achievement to beat so many for what must be a fantastic opportunity for a great future. Well done and as parents you have every right to be mighty proud... Congratulations... :D

That's fantastic! Happy for her and your family but mostly for the adventure she's about to begin!

Safe travels, young lady!

That's great to hear! Congrats to your daughter - and to you and her mom, the folks who raised her.

Congratulations, Navy is a good choice. We were Army back through the Civil War. My son left college to go Navy, nuclear sub. A steel company came looking for him, now a project engineer.

She will have interest where ever she chooses to go. The private sector recognizes the discipline and purpose it takes in the service. Congrats again to both of you.

Thanks John. Mrs. YK has been getting a little better each day. The pain is still significant, but at this rate, I don't think she will need the kyphoplasty. That's good. If the progress continues, she'll start physical therapy in early February.

Congrats, nursing programs are about the hardest college program to take. My daughter is a nurse, and felt like quitting several times, but stuck with it , and now is doing quite well.

These types of stories about young people who are doing things we don't expect, but appreciate so much, are always welcomed! Nothing makes me feel better about the youth today than to hear this kind of story!
