And then there's "caliber" when everyone is clearly picturing* "cartridge".

+1

Especially since he is accurate and knowledgeable most of the times. I think we've all accidently said "bullet" instead of "cartridge" or "clip" instead of "magazine" once in a blue moon.

I see that in even websites like ours all the time...

Phrases like "pistol caliber lever guns" we use, or the 'tactical' equivalent, "pistol caliber carbines"...

If they are referring to the diameter of the bullet there's nothing unique about pistol bullets versus carbine or rifle bullets. I suppose they could be using the word caliber to mean 'quality' but that wouldn't make any sense either....

For much of my youth I was a "parts" guy, where the name & part number was all important. Hammer is never good enough, did you want a framing, claw, body, rounding, roofing or driving hammer? Each uniquely different and while marginally interchangeable, not fit for the other's purposes. In this case, "round" would be a suitable substitute for cartridge, and is often used. When I read caliber, I usually picture a muzzleloading firearm. But, in retrospect, it's the firearms manufacturer's fault. I.e., didn't Winchester mark their mdl 1873 carrier ".44 Cal" when in fact it was chambered in 44WCF? Colt does the same, the SAA is simply marked ".45". I suppose in 1873, when there's probably less than 10 "cartridges" in existence, it doesn't matter a great deal. But in today's world, with thousands of different cartridges, it matters quite a bit. If you want to be understood, that is!

That was meant as a "representative list" only, not an all inclusive one! But, yes, certainly another clearly distinctive version of the generic "hammer"!

I believe the first successful suppressor was patented as "silencer" by Maxim, so I can see where they get it from.

Well, not only that, but what about SilencerCo, Silencer Central, Silencer Shop . . . Idiocy. I guess they should all run out and change their names.

Yes, Noir is a bit of a fool. Watch a few of his videos, you'll see. But his heart's in the right place, he just lacks a few IQ points. Lots of people do.
