Sad day

Post by GunnyMack »

June of 2010 I brought home a little ball of black fur. Winchester Magnum became her name or Winnie.
Win was a very rambunctious puppy, destructive ain't the word for her during puppyhood! She ate a couch, wrecked chair rungs, chewed a grandfather clock my Dad made... you name it she wrecked it! I finally realized it was separation anxiety but there was no way she would crate without sedatives!
Just about the time Win turned 18 months old it was like someone flipped a light switch and a perfect dog was revealed! No more bad in her what so ever.
Being a pretty girl the breeder I got her from convinced me to breed Winnie. I found a really handsome yellow stud and we had a litter. From that litter I kept Claro she became my right hand man as it were. A year later after having such fun with the first litter I bred Winnie a second time and we had puppies again. Then we switched it up and bred to a different stud. From that litter I kept Parker.
This past spring Win was diagnosed with diabetes. She aged remarkedly fast, her eyes went, nerve damage in her back end... this past week I could see her wasting away, no appetite, hardly walk. Of course I knew what I had to do.
This morning Winnie went over the Rainbow Bridge.

So very sorry to see this. She sounds a lot like my first Lab. It was like we brought home a velociraptor instead of a puppy but just before she turned two the same thing happened. The "Good Dog" switch was flipped and she turned into smartest, friendliest sweetest dog I've ever had.

It's always tough letting them go, but they are always there in your heart and thoughts of better days.

It's a bummer when it happens, but one of the best ways to learn to appreciate life - seeing that the dog had a good life while around those relatively few (compared to humans) years makes one realize you have to enjoy every day you can, because they are numbered for us all.

I'm truly sorry for your loss. The grief is very real and comparable to the loss of a human friend.

Gunny, putting down a beloved dog is about the saddest thing I have ever done, and I have done it several times. Never gets easier, but I have consoled myself with how peaceful it is. The first drug induces unconsciousness and the second stops the heart. Our dogs live for the moment and don't worry about tomorrow -- another of their many blessings. When I went through this with my Brittany, "The Watson," I looked at the vet -- a friend -- with tears in my eyes and said, "Why can't it be this easy for humans?"

Man, I am so sorry buddy. Nothing worse than losing such a friend and companion. Take comfort in the fact that you gave her a good life and she knew she was loved.

So sorry, my friend.

Very sorry for your loss. Never an easy thing.

If you are able to stream music you should give Benjamin Tod's song Mercy Bark a listen. Its about his dog and best friend that he had to put down. Benjamin was a hobo who traveled the country and had his dog by his side for a long time. Its a great song but sad.

Really sorry to hear of your loss Gunny! It's never easy, and always tough to move on, or even think about another pet later. We went 8 yrs. after both of our cats passed away in 2014 before getting a pair of sister kittens this year. And we went much longer after our springer spaniel passed to get another dog. She's 9 now, and already showing signs of old age, and back/hip problems.

I have to agree with MarlinMan, that loosing a pet, cat or dog, is horrible, and my two cats are getting way up there now. I totally understand the love of dogs and their unconditional love. I would only have to add that even cats can show the same love, depending on how they are raised. Terrible circumstances, really sorry to hear. Dogs live so brightly but so short it seems!
