BEAR MARKET ? IDK

Hi GRIZZ,

We have officially hit a bear market in the S&P 500 Index. As of today’s close, the S&P 500 total return is down -21.3% from its highs at the start of this year, breaching the down -20% mark.
How’d we get here? Two words, in our view: stimulus and expectations.

Soon after Covid hit and the world stopped, the Fed jumped in to stabilize the foundation of our financial system (the bond market) with $4.5T of security purchases. It was followed by an additional $3.6T of US government money, first to businesses and then to the consumer directly through extra unemployment benefits, child-tax-credit payments, and checks in the mail.
Today, we find ourselves in a place where all that helpful stimulus money is unwinding. Since the start of the year, the market has been trying to find the correct expectations of the future.
So while the ignition for this drop was Friday’s inflation report (+8.6% year over year for May), the greater driving factor is still a question centered on valuations.
Let’s unpack that.
The inflation report was a little higher than officially expected (by 0.3%), and with the benefit of near-term hindsight, it seems that unspoken expectations were for inflation to come in lower. So anything at the same level, or even mildly higher, was going to set off the stock market drop we got on Friday, following through to today.
The greater reference to valuation — the value the market agrees to pay today for a company’s future earnings — is that it’s trying to find what businesses should be worth in the future, knowing that the stimulus is gone and inflation is here.
In terms of numbers, the 12-month forward price-to-earnings ratio (P/E) for the S&P 500 Index is now about 16.5x, down from a peak of 23x last year. In a historical context, this is in line to above some of the historical averages: 10-year (16.9), 20-year (15.5), and 25-year (16.5).
So far, all of the fall in valuations this year have come from the drop in the “P” (prices), versus a fall in earnings expectations — the “E.” That’s because earnings estimates for this year and next are still at record highs.
Will the market continue to fall?
Anything is possible. Looking back to 1945, when bear markets occurred, 70% of the time they related to a recession, and the average return during a recession was -30%.

From here, further drops in the market depend more greatly on the “E,” as expectations for the next 12 months and for 2023 are high and likely need to come down. For context, aggregate earnings for the S&P 500 Index are expected to be +10% higher for each of the next two years. That seems inconsistent with rising costs and the related expectation of slowing growth. As a result, it’s reasonable that earnings may actually be lower than current expectations by 5%. Assuming this is about right, in our analysis, it could mean market levels would look closer to fair value if down further, by mid-single digits. Thus, the S&P 500 would come close to 30% down for the year, and in line with the average for a recession.
Will we have a recession?
It’s very possible — led by reassessment of corporate earnings while they cut their costs from higher expenses and softer demand. If that’s right, we are about two-thirds of the way through the market downturn (closer to the bottom than the top).
Could we be wrong about this? (Yes — and we sort of hope we are, to the upside.)
Evidence of better earnings growing, a quicker cooling of inflation than expected, and even ancillary events such as a true shift in Covid policy from China or a ceasefire in Russia’s war on Ukraine, can quickly shift expectations positively.
What does this mean for investors?
Diversification is often the answer to a lot of investing questions. It’s never a bad time to review your positions and your plan (or make one). When looking through your portfolio, consider the balance of holdings — higher-quality or lower-valued areas such as dividend stocks, and those in energy and healthcare can be attractive to some investors and can serve as a balance for riskier growth companies that may take longer than average to recover. In addition, depending on your personal situation and investing style, keeping funds available for a “dip buy” may also be prudent.
Volatility is higher these days, but try not to let it trigger an investment reaction. Staying the course may be the right decision as equity markets have historically provided positive returns over the long term.

At least once a week I see somebody who has had personally, or had a family member or friend who has suffered an obvious vaccine-related side effect, yet has been told by the 'authorities' that "...there's nothing to see move along..."

Sometimes the person has had side effects that they will probably get over, but the point is still that they were told that the vaccines were tested and proven "safe and effective". The worst are the women who suffered miscarriages or strokes during pregnancy, yet were not only told by their obstetricians that the vaccines were safe and effective but they also pressured them to get the vaccines, making them feel like if they didn't get vaccinated it meant they didn't care about their baby.

It turns out that the testing was done on mice, not humans, and the pregnancies were terminated before the baby mice were born. Testing was done later on humans, and the majority of the data was mysteriously 'lost', but the data that was handed over after legal pressure and whistleblowers were brought to bear, indicated a huge number of miscarriages and side effects. One has to wonder what the data that was conveniently lost would have shown...

it is interesting that since the blackout on VAERS reporting numbers, there is silence about the #killvax excess deaths, but the promotion of it down to infants is continuing as if nothing immoral or illegal has happened.

one unintended consequence of the vaers blackout is that people, some people, right thinking people quit wearing the person-obliterating self-isolating masks.

my sense is that there is a slight pause on the devil's mass casualty attack against humans, while the hyper-inflation attack gathers momentum, and the other jackboot falls . . . satanic hate against YHWH's creation is ramping up in perfect conformity to the Revelation . . .

I came across this article I had saved a link to and it reminded me of the double standard where the social media doctors seemed to rely on when it comes to covid information instead of actually reading the primary medical literature, would always criticize studies of ivermectin or hydroxychloroquine, by selectively reporting only a handful of studies that were in fact poorly designed. Then they would also selectively omit details like presented in this article which typically were far worse problems when it came to 'studies' on the vaccinations.

One problem is that when comparing relatively-rare events (just like 'school shootings' or other gun-control events), we tend to think in individual experience, like a friend who said "well, nine of us in our medical group got vaccines, and none of them had any problems..." - yet they were vaccinating against a disease with only a one in five thousand (or less) chance of killing them. A "data set" of nine has zero meaning in that situation.

On the other hand, when you look at a national trend, whether disease deaths, vaccine deaths, or whatever, it certainly is thought provoking:

Todd: Hello… Operator…listen to me…I can’t speak very loud. – This is an emergency. I’m a passenger on a United flight to San Francisco.. We have a situation here….Our plane has been hijacked…..can you understand me?
Lisa: (exhaling a deep breath to herself) I understand… Can the hijackers see you talking on the phone?
Todd: No
Lisa: Can you tell me how many hijackers are on the plane?
Todd: There are three that we know of.
Lisa: Can you see any weapons? What kind of weapons do they have?
Todd: Yes…. they don’t have guns….they have knives – they took over the plane with knives.
Lisa: Do you mean…like steak knives?
Todd: No, these are razor knives…like box cutters.
Lisa: Can you tell what country these people are from?
Todd: No…..I don’t know. They sound like they’re from the mid-east.

Todd: Someone announced from the cockpit that there was a bomb on board. He said he was the captain and to stay in our seats and stay quiet.
He said that they were meeting these men’s demands and returning to the airport… It was very broken English, and… I’m telling you…it sounded fake!
Lisa: Ok sir, please give me your name.
Todd: My name is Todd Beamer.
Lisa: Ok Todd….my name is Lisa…Do you know your flight number? If you can’t remember, it’s on your ticket.
Todd: It’s United Flight 93.
Lisa: Now Todd, can you try to tell me exactly what happened?
Todd: Two of the hijackers were sitting in first class near the cockpit. A third one was sitting near the back of the coach section. The two up. front got into the cockpit somehow; there was shouting. The third hijacker said he had a bomb. It looks like a bomb. He’s got it tied to his waist with a red belt of some kind.
Lisa: So is the door to the cockpit open?
Todd: No, the hijackers shut it behind them.
Lisa: Has anyone been injured?
Todd: Yes, ..they…they killed one passenger sitting in first class. There’s been lots of shouting. We don’t know if the pilots are dead or alive. A flight attendant told me that the pilot and copilot had been forced from the cockpit and may have been wounded.
Lisa: Where is the 3rd hijacker now Todd?
Todd: He’s near the back of the plane. They forced most of the passengers into first class. There are fourteen of us here in the back. Five are flight attendants. He hasn’t noticed that I slipped into this pantry to get the phone. The guy with the bomb ordered us to sit on the floor in the rear of the plane……….oh Jesus.. Help!
Lisa: Todd….are you ok? Tell me what’s happening!
Todd: Hello…..We’re going down….I think we’re going to crash……Wait – wait a minute. No, we’re leveling off….we’re ok. I think we may be turning around…..That’s it – we changed directions. Do you hear me….we’re flying east again.
Lisa: Ok Todd…. What’s going on with the other passengers?
Todd: Everyone is… really scared. A few passengers with cell phones have made calls to relatives. A guy, Jeremy, was talking to his wife just before the hijacking started. She told him that hijackers had crashed two planes into the World Trade Center……Lisa is that true??
Lisa: Todd…..I have to tell you the truth…..it’s very bad. The World Trade Center is gone. Both of the towers have been destroyed.
Todd: Oh God —help us!
Lisa: A third plane was taken over by terrorists. It crashed into the Pentagon in Washington DC. Our country is under attack….and I’m afraid that your plane may be part of their plan.
Todd: Oh dear God. Dear God…….Lisa, will you do something for me?

Goodwin: Hello Todd. This is Agent Goodwin with the FBI. We have been monitoring your flight. Your plane is on a course for Washington, DC. These terrorists sent two planes into the World Trade Center and one plane into the Pentagon. Our best guess is that they plan to fly your plane into either the White House or the United States Capital Building.

The plane is flying real erratic….We’re not going to make it out of here. I was using a website to track the AK storm, and found another illustration that explains why we use a different system in navigation. One concept is that degrees on a compass is direction. The other is the familiar concept that time is distance. To the end that when I plan road trips I use hours between waypoints as if I were still at sea. {appropriate jokes welcome here

a knot, is a nautical mile/hour. time and distance. in the first second image km/hr is a derivative of kn and it leaves out some background information.

Historically, a minute was defined as the meridian arc length corresponding to one minute ( 1 60 of a degree) of latitude. Today the international nautical mile is defined as exactly........(6,076 ft).

one degree of latitude is one nautical mile. this is crucial in celestial navigation.

then the location 167° West is measuring how far west of Greenwich England that spot is. It is also how we get time zones, it is about 11 hours from Greenwich, or that spot passed Greenwich at midnight GMT. The ability to accurately know the exact time to the sixtieth of a second of the meridian we are on allows us to cross that information with easily obtained, with a sextant or a gps, the precise intersection, our location. It's all done by measuring time, the gps measures time with an atomic clock, one second defined as

“The second is the duration of 9,192,631,770 periods of the radiation corresponding to the transition between the two hyperfine levels of the ground state of the caesium-133 atom.”

The gps receiver measures the distance to two or more satellites to this degree of precision, and calculates our position.

In 1983 the definition of a meter, which is still valid today, was finally established. They wanted to kill two birds with one stone by choosing the speed of light as a reference point. Until then, this was measured, so it changed with improved measurement methods. Now, however, the decision was made to define it firmly and the meter as well. Accordingly, one meter is the distance that light travels in a vacuum in the 299,792,458th part of a second.

Besides which, the metric system still does not tell time, does it? and time is distance, Right? And longitude is based on how far Greenwich rotates in 24 hours, broken down into degrees, minutes, and seconds. Time = Distance. As in light-years = distance.

THAT is a good question. I was reading about the cesium atomic clock which has a rate of less than 1s in something like 9 billion years. the reason for accurate time is to geolocate the exact position on earth where a line drawn from Sirius touches the earth so we can calculate how far we are from that spot. The annual navigation tables give that location for every celestial navigation object for every minute or second of the year. Depending on how much money you want to spend

I think such a rate as the earth's rotation won't affect a computation in our life time.

BTW, I am good at piloting with electronic devices and have thousands of hours experience, but I am a new and slow student of celestial arts and publish these delights as i discover them.

The pushers of 'mandated vaccination' need to go to jail for a long time. It's one thing to 'recommend' something that 'authorities' say may be beneficial, but QUITE ANOTHER to 'mandate' something, regardless of what 'authorities' say.

2 corinthians chapter 5 verse 8

this is a common faith up lifter, stating what we are confident about, this is EQUALLY TRUE for believers and unbelievers, which is developed in this section of scripture. I know this, but in hearing it quoted it became accented by the context in verse 10. The point of the entire section, we MUST ALL APPEAR before Christ.

This precludes hating our enemies, because those who are, for instance, destroying America and hating on Christ's children of the resurrection, are going to open their eyes and see Christ face to face. And then what? The unbelievers are instantly converted, but too late. This is the urgency of the great news of the existence and return of Christ's Kingdom.
