I want to put an Aimpoint H-1 sight on my 1892 to help old eyes get on target, but don't want to d/t extra holes in it if I can avoid it. The sight is designed to be installed on guns with a Picatinny or Weaver rail; eye relief is unlimited and the sight is parallax free.
It may not be traditional, but my kids can take it off and revert to the irons when they inherit it. In the meantime, I want to hit what I aim at!
Question: is there a base that will fit into the rear sight dovetail that will hold this sight?
I appreciate any help the group can offer.

Hi Bruce,
This is what I'm doing. I don't much care for the high postion of this propoint because of the rings but I'm building a stainless Puma in 454 for a feller and it will get the Hola type red dot pictured below.
But it will be in silver to match the gun. This thing is only about 3.5" long and the screen is about 1" wide. I'll probably end up cutting the rail down to fit it, too. That should make a more compact easier on the eye setup.

What is base for that setup?
Good afternoon sir,
Thank you for the reply.
I'm working on the 1892 (with the flame maple stock and forearm) that you slicked up for me, and I don't want to make many permanent mods to it beyond the stock work and Williams rear peep.
I saw that picture you showed here from some time ago when I did a search on 'red dot', and it seems very usable. It looks like you have to d/t the barrel, but when you added the idea of cutting down the rail, it became unclear. Do you d/t the barrel, or is the cut down rail so short that you can screw it into a dovetail blank?
BTW, do you have a specific reason to prefer the sight you've selected over the H-1? It can't be color, because it also comes in silver. Cost? Availability? Something else? I'd be interested in hearing your reasoning.
Thanks.

The barrel does have to be D&T-ed. You might be able to get a short rail mounted by D&T-ing a dovetail insert but I don't thing it would hold up to heavy recoilers by it's self.
That leaves the B Square side mount. I haven't used one but it's my understanding it too is a no gunsmithing mount. I haven't used one for two reasons. I don't like side mounted scopes and most non gunsmthing setups aren't very durable.
As for the reason for using that particular halo sight, mostly cost. I can sell that setup installed for less than $300.
How bout this? If you are concerned about D&T-ing the barrel then later removing the rail and replacing the stock rear sight, just D&T so the stock rear sight will cover the holes when replaced.

This Burris would be an even smaller alternative.
The screen is only .82" x .59"

Thank you
There's good food for thought in your suggestions.
I'm making a dovetail insert as a front post for a one-piece Weaver type base. The base will fasten to the post in the rear sight dovetail and to d&t holes in the receiver. I'm trying to keep things as low as possible for a reddot, scope, or holo.
The location of the holes is also an issue for me. That's why having them in the receiver is less noticable in my opinion than the barrel.
