First fox with winchester 9422M.

Post by gamekeeper »

The gamekeeper on the estate where I live asked me to watch out for a fox seen in the Wood opposite my humble abode. On Monday the 5th my girlfriend saw it from the kitchen window, I grabbed my 9422M and stepped outside. I could see the mangy looking fox drinking from a puddle about 90yds away. I took aim with my open sights and squeezed the trigger, only to see the fox turn and run back into the Wood, my view was obstructed by a Spruce tree so I ran to see what had happened. No sign of the fox, no blood, nothing, so I searched around and concluded that my 59 year old eyesight definately requires the help of a scope. Sunday the 11th I'm walking with my girlfriend through the Wood and there amongst the Bluebells I see the bloated body of the fox and smelt it too! The vixen had only gone about 40 yds from where I shot her and died out of sight in a clump of Bluebells. I reckon a good dog like Nath's would be more than useful and the scope can wait a while longer!

Well done. Not just a hit, but a solid kill at 90 yards with open sights. Were you shooting the 40 grain stuff I assume?

[Sunday the 11th I'm walking with my girlfriend through the Wood ]

Nath can keep his dog, as you've got a dual-purpose companion - she not only helps find downed game, but you have a shooting blind heater in the balance ! Good Show ! !

Now lets get this right, your 59 and got a girlfriend! Then you got this lady friend to spend alot of time in the kitchen! Also watching out for vermin!
Also she likes being in the woods! You are the luckiest feller in the world!
Good shot, where did you hit the fox? Was it one of them solids?
Ain't you got a dog GK? You would of found it on the day. Gamekeepers like dog men too I'm sure you know that.
I hope you rubbed that sent gland on both of you so you can get the dog fox now! Or drag it under kitchen window!!
You have a good gamekkeeper if he knows how valuable an extra set of eyes and a rifle are about the place good on him.

Nath, there's life in the old dog yet!
I was using winchester 40grain jacketed hollow points. I only used the solids on zeroing in. I hope to try some of those 34grain wizz bangs when I can find some. That old vixen was so high and maggoty I dain't spend too much time looking for where I had hit her.
My girlfriend has a dog, a 5 month old puppy, a Chinese Crested crossed with a Pomeranian two fine hunting breeds as i'm sure you'll agree!!!!!
I sure miss having a dog of my own and would love a Border Terrier for chasing the bunnies out of the Brambles.

Give me them Win 40grn HP's any day if what I remember of them out of my friends gun many years ago is anything to go by,gasp, that was amouth full!
Anyway sounds like you got plenty of whiz bang going on as is!
A crested newt crossed with a pomfrete, hmm, don't think I have come across one of those yet
I knew where a litter of borders were till recent, good dogs they are.
Oh and good to hear that the lever was ready for action too

Good show!

Also, do not be picking on Game Keeper about the women; my 70 year old brother in law just broke up with his 35 year old girl friend and took back the Lexus convertible he gave her (let her drive, actually) and then he GAVE it to a 45 year old girl friend. Yikes, what gets into us old fogeys?

Gamekeeper, I got to thinking this afternoon, those 40 gr hollowpoints probably just exploded on the skin of that fox and you didn't get any penetration. You should probably try a .177 air rifle like ol' Nath  .
