I have one that used to fire green apples over 100 yards into the Missouri River--golf balls went even further. They are potentially dangerous and not just "toys".
My 95 yr old neighbor insisted that I bring my potato gun to her house when she held a picnic. Got a real "hoot" out of it.
They are putting 16" pipeline in on our property, and a 400 yard section goes under the river and sticks out at a 30 degree angle right now... Every time I see it I think how cool it would be to take one of those 50 foot sections of pipe, a bowling ball, some wadding, and more gunpowder than I've probably seen in my whole life, and make a bowling-ball cannon....
It's 2025 - "Cutesy Time is OVER....!" [Dan Bongino]
We built several tater guns over the years. had one fracture and blow out a section of the pipe at the south end of the combustion chamber. . must of been a "new" batch of aqua-net. after that I wrapped the new one with several layers of duct tape. more going on in there than I thought.
Because they "expel a projectile using expanding gases", they are a heavy misdemeanor here. If someone gets injured it turns into a felony.
Not worth losing my Second Amendment Rights over.

Interesting.
If someone got injured with one of these it wouldn't be a felony?

-probably only if it were intentional.
In the statutes here, even an accidental injury from a homemade "spud gun" is declared a felony. No matter what end you're on.
-also, a potato cannon uses an ignited explosive gas - not a progressive burning/expanding gas, so it may not be moved across state lines. Point is they're most certainly not toys, so educate yourself to your laws & penalties.

We built tennis ball Cannon's back in the day.
Taped 3 to 4 metal tennis ball cans together.
Small hole in the end can.
Tennis ball down the tube.
A few drops of lighter fluid in the little hole.
Shake the tube a little.
Zippo lighter off.
Tennis ball straight up out of sight.
Exercise finding the ball's.

We did the same except with rubbing alcohol .
Cool, never tried alcohol as the propellent.
The old white tennis balls gave the best visibility. (If you could find clean one's)
