Leather on levers

Looking at the "new Colt" string by casastahle I had to notice the nice leather wrapping on his lever. I have a Rossi 20 inch blue, another ordered (Trapper stainless) from Steve Young, and just went down and bought a Henry Carbine .22 that the string from Kooz got me off my rear about (man, ain't this forum great on the wallet!? Yessssss!)
Anyhow, I do want to wrap my levers with leather and would like to hear about possible damage to blued levers and mostly see and hear about the best ways to do the wrapping.
Who has leather wrapped levers, and can we see and hear about them?

There was a thread on the old forum about leather-wrapped levers. Even showed a step by step process on how to do it right. I miss the old forum...

With enough levers to outfit a couple of squads, I have yet to wrap one with leather. Not because of any animus, as I like the look, but I have rather fat fingers and have no real need to do so.

However, I do recall a mention that certain tanning chemicals are to be avoided in contact with metal parts. I just don't recall if it was chrome or vegetable tanned hides that could cause rust over a period of time, nor what period that was.

Lever Wrap 101 04/17/07

I thought I would share the way I use to wrap the brake and clutch levers on my 76 Shovelhead (Never did like fringe and stuff flapping in the wind) figured it would work great on another type of lever.

I had an old piece of leather from the garage, it measured 38â€

Now, that's what I'm talking about. Man, beautiful job, and pics and explaination perfect. No loose ends, love it.
Kid- Yeah man, I miss the old forum also, but it's so great the new folks have welcomed everyone and it works so well, thanks again so much to the new one for welcoming us. I agree, levers hurt so good!
Griff- thanks for the reference to Lever, he will know for sure and a great guy to deal with. I have a couple of his scabbards coming in a week or so, he is top calibre.

Trial & error, emphasis on error.

My wrap project involved: scissors, leather punch, harness needle,
some inappropriate language, and bloody finger tips.
O and not having a clue as to what I was doing.

I will take a couple of close-ups of it tomorrow and post them
for yea. It did take me awhile to get it to look the way I wanted it.

Here's mine. I took the leather from a baseball mitt stringing kit, added some gun oil to it to darken it and also protect the lever under the wrap. A longer piece of leather would have been better, but I like being able to slide this back and forth to get rid of any crud that might form, and oil the lever too:

Those old baseball mitt's do come in handy.
That is exactly where the leather came from for my scope covers.
A little olive oil softens old leather up right nicely.

Hey y'all, all leathers can cause a rust/corrosion problem. Chrome tanned leathers are some of the worst because of the chemicals used in tanning. But even vegetable tanned leathers will eventually cause rust. It's the moisture the leather absorbs that's the culprit. Every now and then I'd take the leather off and inspect the lever, re-wrap it and after a while, do it all over again if you have to have the leather wrapped lever.

You are correct. I do not put leather wraps on my leverguns. My leverguns get exposed to all kinds of weather and leather on Metal or wood will cause damage over time if not properly attended to.

I take my butt covers off and clean the stock and oil it. I only oil the cover as needed very sparingly. When ever the leather gets wet, it comes off of the rifle until it is dry and the rifle gets a good wipe down.

By doing this, there is no damamge to the leather or the rifle.

I wrap the levers on all of my CAS main match rifles. My method is very much like the one posted by salvo. I use a strip of smoked moose hide and "trade beads."

Since my match rifles are basically "tools", I really don't care about any possible effects from the leather.

Most of my levers are tools as well, but all but two collectibles. So I am careful about how I take care of them.
