Finally Got One!

Post by Griff »

A bore scope that is! Ordered the "wrong one"... It's 7mm and apparently needs something at the end of the barrel to diffuse the light enough to see the barrel walls. Went back and found the right one, but they were sold out... ordered a 5.5mm one, and it'll be here in a couple of weeks.

I'm a little disappointed in the one I got... it sure seems to highlight all the dust that's in my barrel!
Image
The pic looks a lot clearer on my monitor, took me a while to find the light control on the USB plug...
Image
A little better pic, closer to the white card I'm using to reflect the light.

Still, an excellent little tool to view the condition of rifling... and what I'm especially interested in, the leade. Using the 7mm one, it just fits inside the barrel of my .30-30... And answers a question I've had for the past several months. I've VERY seldom fired any jacketed ammo thru this gun... but a few years back did kill a nice whitetail buck with a Federal Hi-Shok round, after verifying the POI is the same as my cast stuff. I guess I only thought I got all the copper out of the bore!
Image
Since this is a much tighter fit in the bore, a LOT more light is reflected off the sides of the bore vs. the .45 Colt bore.

Shoot I thought you meant you killed a deer :(

Were those taken with a Hawkeye Bore Scope or some other kind ?

You know I've looked at several barrels with those instruments and they'd make you think the gun was junk . And then take them to the range or before I looked at the bore and shoot sub 1/2 MOA groups .

Griff, that is a LOT of copper, friend! Don't dump it all on the market at once, or you'll upset commodity prices!

Wow, that's one rough looking bore. Maybe in a couple thousand rounds it'll smooth out some.

I think a bore scope would be a neat tool to have.

Actually, this rifle is capable of ¾" groups @ 100 yards. It's a '79 carbine fitted with a Numrich barrel, .850 AC octagon from breech to muzzle, no taper.

I've used Sweets before but I really got the feeling it was kind of harsh. I guess it's just me but I feel better about using Hoppes #9 as many times as it takes to get clean patches rather than use the Sweets.

Griff,
Shove a white patch down within a couple of inches of where you want the picture to reflect the light back better. Works with mine.
