I got spider bit during the night 8 days ago. Update

Post by williamranks »

The little *** is called a Hobo spider. This time of year here the males leave their webs and wander all over the place looking for females, reminds me of myself 40 years ago. Local hives and itching. Two hours ago it was my left side ribs and now it's my hands. Blood clots in the leg it bit and the veins looked like I was wearing a tourniquet. There's no treatment except aspirin to dissolve the clots and Benedryl cream for the itch.

9/22 Got a little scratch on my leg below the knee a couple days ago. Tiny thing, never felt it. Now its turning painless, crusty and growing the same as the bite 20 inches away on my toe. They have no treatment for Hobo or Recluse, It's a flesh dissolving enzyme. I will go in for blood and urine tests in case it's effecting internals.

Learn something new every day. I thought Brown recluse and black widows were all you had to worry about.

Before I retired from pest control, I had to deal with False Widows, they look like Black Widows but not quite as bad.
Folks kept telling me "there are no harmful spiders in the UK" WRONG!
I hope the bite heals soon.

We in CA don't YET have recluses, but now we have both black and brown widow spiders. The brown ones are new. People were blaming our neighbors to the south for them until some arachnid specialist did DNA tests on them and concluded that they originated in North Africa....

I got hobo bit about 7 years ago, was taking a nap on the lawn under a shade tree was bit on my face next to my left eye it got ugly 50 cent size and my eye swelled shut and I was having vision problems, I knew of a vet in Oregon that had worked with venomous bites on animals and people overseas he said to use big doses of vit C and vit E reg doses and apply MSM cream to the bite area. I went a step further cause of my vision I injected powdered MSM with sterile water (cooked and cooled) into the bite area it stopped the swelling and decay and in 2 weeks it was just a red blotch and no scab. Hope you get better, MSM is a good product and promotes your body to heal itself. danny

They traveled from England to Korea, then from Korea to the US. Landed in Anchorage on boats from Korea, and are in the Anchorage are in AK.

The interesting thing is that they tend to stay in fields and out of houses in England, but in the US, they tend to live in houses. People get bit a lot more as a result. Same kind of poison as a recluse, not quite as bad. I have been bit 4 times by recluse, never by hobo.

Fortunately I got an "eating other bugs" bite instead of the big one. The bite site is only 1/4" and not painful. I might have some overall weakness but, I'm retired and it's hard to tell.
I used Cortizone the first couple days for the itch and one morning I rubbed my leg and the skin started peeling like from a sunburn.
The itch is the most aggravating effect and the veins in my leg swelling was the scariest. I had so many swollen capillaries it looked black in spots, after taking aspirin for a day they shrunk back down.
I'e killed five more in the house and haven't seen any since, the males have a flat body and can slip in past any crack in the door weather stripping. Gotta be quick to smash them, they run fast.
I've seen a few of their funnel nests around and, now that I know what to look for, they're gonna die.

That's is really too bad, fire ants make me itch something fierce for 2 weeks or so. 1 thing I heard bout the "HOBOS" is you have spray or squash each on individually. Do you or anyone else know if that statement is true. How cold does it have to be before they are dormant?

Seems to be some thought that there are actually no Brown Recluse spiders in CA, but the bites are in fact from the Hobo. A friend was bitten twice by what the doctors thought had to be a Brown Recluse, but since the consensus is that we don't have them here it must have been a Hobo.

He solved the problem by tenting the house and killing everything. Reminds me or Ripley. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aCbfMkh940Q

We had tons of Black Widows on Maui, they loved my wood pile so had to be cautious when picking firewood. I've never been bitten by a spider but have been bitten by centipedes 3 times, and boy does that smart not just the initial bite area but also the swollen lymph nodes in the groin or arm pits. I have a natural reflex to instantly kill every one I see. I throw the big ones in a jar filled with alcohol sorta my trophy jar for these monsters. :x

This is the only Black Widow I'll tolerate around here.
Ji, I got nailed by an Aloha Centipede while unrolling tarps at Schofield, getting to go to the field. The 6 incher ran up my arm and got me just below the elbow. I pulled at it, and the head/fangs stayed in my arm...I was pretty sick for a couple days. Huge lump festered and turned the colors of the rainbow  Your scorpions hurt a little, but no lasting damage after an hour or so....Then, there was that little, 1/4" green spider. It felt like a RR spike going into my arm....

Black Widows, Brown Widows and any other number of biting and stinging critters abound in SoCal. Before I go under the house, in the attic or delve into my shed I bug bomb them. Bitten by a Black Widow as a kid has made me a bit gun shy. Those things hurt like all get our, as I remember.

California does have brown recluse spiders.. Back in the late 60's a female friend in Napa was bitten on the ankle by one and managed to collect the body for identification. It took over a year to heal A spot as large as a silver dollar right atop the ankle turned to jelly and continued to drain the entire time. A thin film would form a top the pus pool but even a slight blow would tear it as it would drain again.

My grandmother was once bitten by black widow.. The symptoms were the same but hers healed in less than 6 months.

I'm still fighting this thing. Hives and itching in different places at different times. If I scratch it leaves white welts surrounded by red rash.
Wherever the itch is the veins stand up high and proud.
I found some of the funnel shaped nests outside on the siding and killed them with wasp spray.
Haven't seen any more spiders inside the house so I guess breeding season is over.
Some of the poison must still be circulating, I can sleep 8 hours at night and need another 2-3 in the afternoon.
When it cools off I'll go into the crawl space and spray the Demon WP, Amazon has it. It's supposed to leave a powder residue that kills on contact.
The cover fell off the bite finally and it was more crusty than blood, makes me think the poison is traveling in the lymph fluid under the skin more than the blood.

jeeeeeee...we have them all here...BW's, tarantulas...

I ran across a BW so big i could see it well enough, from the ground (it was in the gable of my garage) to shoot the darned thing with an air rifle.

I've shot numerous tarantulas with air rifles. for some reason, they like our horse corral...

I make a daily 'patrol' around the corral to keep them away from the horse and clean out any cobwebs any spider builds after I saw our mare inhale a big gob of spider web... they are very difficult to get rid of, too.

if you have farm equipment watch it, too...I find them (BW's) in even the bucket of my front-loader tractor...

incidentally, any one who doesn't think a BW, and tarantula, cannot move fast, needs to think again...they move like greased lightening when they need to! YIKES!

I find them every 5 years or so around here...feed them crickets....when the kids get tired of them I turn them loose.

My son sent me a pic of one of the native centipedes when he was stationed on Okinawa in the USMC. Really DON'T want those things over here; I'm too old and feeble to carry my .410 all day. (But I guess if I saw one, I'd somehow find the grit to do it....).

I thought that was a galaxy far, far away.

Black widows here. If I'm working on a car down below the house and leave a wheel laying for a day or so I often find them nesting on the underside.

If it were like burning $100 dollar bills I'd still be for shooting them. Try to put the bullet between their pigment-cup ocelli as they sometimes charge when wounded.

Yep, most North American varieties are pretty mellow. Right up til the time they decide to bite, who know what a spider thinks in its tiny mind. And yea, the venom isn't as bad as other spiders. But personally I'm not giving a venomous critter a chance.

Also pretty common in the islands is the Brown Huntsman Spider (aka Cane Spider). They are strictly pursuit spiders running down there prey. They are large and scary looking especially since they run so fast but since they hunt the local roachzillas I leave them be to do their job.

We also have Brown Scorpions who's sting feels about like a bee's

Ji, about 5 years ago I was fishing on the Devils riverabout 25 miles from Mexico. Chopped a 6 in centipede in half with a round nosed shovel and put the halves in a bucket. 3-4 days later, both halves were still live and kicking
We have scorpions here like Alfred Hitchcock has birds. Summer is scorpion season here, they come out about ten pm. It is not uncommon to find 5-6 a night in the house. I hunt em outside as well, they glow brightly under a black light flashlight. Odd, you can drown one in a glass of water, and when they dry out they come back to life  Ice will take the pain away immediately from a sting, which hurts like hades for about 45 minutes. Spiders I like and tolerate.

You sir are an enabler. That and a amazon gift card from last Christmas forced me to buy the Bug-a-Salt. I'm going to give it a try on blackwidows.

Get you some free-range chickens.....solved our scorpion problem. Used to find 50 a year in the house (that means 5000 were there) and in the 5 years since my daughter got rid of her chickens....I've found 2 total. Of course, they also ate all the lizards and pulled up all my St> Augustine grass :(

I'd rather get stung by a scorpion than a red wasp any day. Ive seems to relieve my pain in 5 minutes or less on the scorpion sting. Takes days for a red wasp sting to quit hurting me.

Scorpions do make good terrarium pets.

Back in high school we had a biology teacher that swore there were no scorpions in our area. One day while clearing a hillside for landscaping I overturned a decent size rock and lo and behold there was a scorpion. Not large, sort light brown in color.
I spotted an unbroken soda bottle and herded it in.

On Monday I showed up with said scorpion at school. Try that today without a SWAT call out. Biology was my third period class. The teacher had a habit of asking us how our weekend was. I presented him the scorpion and told him where I got it. I imagine he changed his lecture after that.

Let us know how it works for you. My brother in law loves his and so does his wife. She doesn't even complain about the little bit of salt it puts out.

I even suggested it to someone for garden pests but I'm not sure they took me seriously. It would have to work on tomato horn worms and such.
