Difference between 336 and 308 Marlin Express?
I just noted that the 308 Marlin Express is set at mid 40,000 psi. What is the difference between a regular 336 and a Marlin 308 Express rifle?
Re: Difference between 336 and 308 Marlin Express?
I don't think there is any difference as far as strength is concerned. I believe the 338 is made on the 444/1895 frame, which is a 336 with bigger ports for loading and ejecting. Others here will be more certain. I'm telling you what I think I remember reading somewhere. ![Laughing ](./images/smilies/icon_lol.gif)

The Express rifles have V threads in the barrel/receiver connection rather than square Acme threads.
The V threads allow for a much stronger and closer fitting joint at this rather weak area.
Acme threads are fine for the older/ lower pressure loadings .

I read/heard that the 'V' threads are used in all the "XLR" Marlins - do you know if that is the case...?Chuck 100 yd wrote:The Express rifles have V threads in the barrel/receiver connection rather than square Acme threads. I have an XLR in 30-30 I just got because. . . well, it looked lonesome on the store shelf. . . and when I read about some of the differences intended for more accuracy vs. the 'regular' 336's, I think that was one.

The V threads have more threads per inch thus aren't cut as deep as the square threads . This gives a thicker chamber wall to contain pressure. The 450 Marlin also has V threads , not sure about the other calibers in the XLR's. I have also heard tighter tolerances on the bolt and head space.

I think that all XLR`s have V threads but Don`t know for sure. I also have an XLR .30-30.
One fine little rifle and just super accurate.
I also have a blued .308 Express and a Stainless .338 Express. I like all of them.![Very Happy :D](./images/smilies/icon_biggrin.gif)
