New 4x4

Post by Machado »

Gentlemen,
This contraption is local. Magyrus-Deutz air-cooled 8-liter diesel engine, Mercedes-Benz suspension and transmission, high-flotability tires, outrageous price. I'm thinking about the educational possibilities of this vehicle in the dense and uncivilized urban traffic of Rio de Janeiro.

It must have something to do with conservation, Griff.

I'd be totally happy with a Unimog Doka diesel.

Don't you just love the EPA/CAFE? We can get the Unimog but not the Troller. Getting a "small" body Diesel in the US is virtually "not allowed".

O.I., we're beating a path in that direction. Recent statistics link diesel exhaust fumes to the incident of several types of cancer, mainly lung, throat and thyroid carcinomas. The population at risk (?) now demands stricter regulations on diesel engine emissions. They have already been implemented in the city of São Paulo. 27 million urbanites think they will breathe better. Oh well...

27 million urbanites don't understand where their food comes from.

Not even Brazil's amazing Ethanol program can replace Diesel when it comes to Rural applications.

AFAIC Urbanites can starve.

The ethanol program hangs on the balance between sugar and ethanol prices, because sugar mills are instantly converted into ethanol mills and vice versa, and the raw material is the same. You can expect a steep hike in sugar prices: fires destroyed enormous quantities of sugar at the Santos port and 30,000 tons are burning now in Santa Adélia and threatening the city with a flood of caramel. Consequently, ethanol will soon disappear from the station pumps, discontinued in favor of sugar. Tough titty if your vehicle runs on ethanol only.

Back when I was a kid my dad owned a 1960 Mercedes Benz 190D diesel. Every winter during our rainy season the streets would get flooded with up to 24 inches of water. I remember all the gasoline engines cars dead in the water their ignition systems flooded out while my dad and us in our diesel Benz plowing through the water with no problem even the watertight doors keeping us dry inside the cabin.
