Post by yoteassasin »

so from what i gather 375 brass is a shade shorter of 38-55 brass but i was looking in midway and brass for 375 win is 48 bones for 20 but 38 55 is way! cheaper. can i buy the 38-55 brass and trim it to length and load it as 375 win or is the brass weaker???? also does any one have any favorite loads they would like to share? thanks!

My understanding is that the brass for .38-55 is thinner than .375Win. The difference IIRC is in the web.

Read Paco's article about it at leverguns.com . 38-55 is thinner but works fine. It actually holds more powder.

One thing I noticed about my Marlin 375 and Winchester BB375, they both accept modern 38-55 brass in their chambers.

I didn't try shooting 38-55; I had bought some used 375 brass from a guy and he had one box of unprimed W-W 38-55 brass he threw in with it. I tried chambering one case and it chambered in both guns. Then I gave the 38-55 brass to a friend with a new Marlin.

Most definitely.

The .375 is merely a marginally suped-up .38-55. Here's mine:

Last time I bought brass the 375W was sold out, so I bought some Winchester .38-55 instead. It is easy to trim the brass to .375 dimensions with Lee's trimming tool. However, I have measured the trimmed cases, and there are not any measurable differences between original .375 and trimmed .38-55, neither outside nor inside. I doubt weighing would do any difference. From the producer's point of view, it would be cheaper to make both cases from the same basic one, and then trim to correct length. I suppose that's the way Winchester goes here.

I had asked Paco about it, he said "no problem." I have since shot lots of .38-55 through my .375. No problems at all.

That is another reason I like the .375: it is a two-caliber rifle.

Cheers,

I have a load for the .375W but I would not want to shoot it in a Winchester BB or a Marlin. The load is developed for a Ruger # 3 .375W and would be very much a high pressure load. It uses a Speer 235 gr. semi-spitzer 375H&H bullet. I shot a 4 point bull Elk with the piece, a one shot kill.

If you are discussing the "short", 2.080", .38-55 brass there is no need to trim to 2.060". Just load and shoot. It works fine. 1886.

Lock,Stock & Barrel has 375 Win brass for $50.99 per 100.
http://www.lockstock.com/prodinfo.asp?number=WBR375WIN
Them $28 per 20 ones you were looking at must be gold plated.
Here is a current Midway listing.

I have posted this before, but my experience with original length
2.129 brass was not good in my BB94. Load used was factory
original Imperial 38-55 255 JSP's. Case mouth protruded into throat
area upon firing making it look crimped without a bullet in place.
I did not try shorter modern length brass. Cases on left & right
are the Big Bore fired ones, center case fired in 1894 38-55 made in 1905.
Also, I had fears of putting a 375 power load through the old
38-55 because of same headstamp. I load Hornady 220 gr bullets
over 36 gr of RL7. Not a max load, but starting to compress powder.
