Re: Fake ivory Colt SAA grips?
Pitchy I picked some up way back from Dixie Gunworks ,for my Colt's SAA. They fit real good had to shave em down just very little . Give them a look..Dusty
Re: Fake ivory Colt SAA grips?
Sorry to get off topic but you might consider American Holly for grips Pitchy. To me they have that aged white ivory look but have that warm wood feel.

I bought a couple for a colt pocket positive, grips are original now, and in good shape, but bought a couple of "back up" sets just in case
They will have what you need, they will probably require some fitting.

Re: Fake ivory Colt SAA grips?
Those Eagle Grips are nice, as COSteve suggested.
I purchased some Holly (wood) grips for my Ruger SA and love them. They age with the help of a little oil from your hand and truly look like ivory. But no Colt grips there. These look like they might be interesting for you:

I don't know. With my Ruger, there are some variations in the grip, so I contacted my supplier (Bear Paw) by e-mail to verify the exact fit before ordering the grips.Pitchy wrote:...is third gen the same?
I was not fond of the plastic "ivory" grips that I saw, but am really happy with the way that the natural oil of my hand has "aged" my wooden "ivory" grips.

Re: Fake ivory Colt SAA grips?
Bear Paw, Pitchy, but for Rugers and one or two others. He sells through Amazon. I Just rechecked the site and confirmed that he does not do Colts.Pitchy wrote:I like that look also, who sells those wood ones?
But other suppliers sell Holly grips. I'll see if I can find the other guy I contacted about using that wood. I gather that it is a bit difficult to find large enough holly trees to work with, but the stuff is far cheaper than what one calls "exotic" woods. My grips were about the same or less than simulated ivory neoprene grips (or whatever that plastic stuff is).
There are many Ruger suppliers; not as many Colt grip suppliers. But here is a list.
This one LOOKS good; probably the most affordable. American Holly grips for the Colt SAA, etc.:
http://chiselandplaneworkshop.com/Our-C ... -Grips.php
This one sells faux ivory in DuPont Corian, but it is a little pricey:
http://www.collinscraftgrips.com/pistol ... .+Colt+SAA
These guys will do one-of-a-kind custom grips with several woods, probably Holly:
http://www.exoticpistolgrips.com/
This guy is among the best. Beautiful stuff, carved designs in simulated ivory.
"Grips made by the Gripmaker are made from extremely durable urethane and ages (yellows) like ivory. They are made over-sized so that with a little fitting the grips will fit properly. The more generic 1873 S.A. style will require a bit more fitting as it was designed to fit a wider range of import and authentic peacemaker style revolvers."

Re: Fake ivory Colt SAA grips?
I've got the American Hollys on a few Rugers. They're excellent and great values (and do look like medium aged ivory from a few feet), but relative to ivory is relatively soft and more prone to dinging...So, IMO, if you cannot do real ivory, a Colt deserves nothing less than Tru Ivory. If you "actually" use your Colt (rather than maybe shoot once a year and back into the safe) the beauty of the Tru Ivorys is you can bang them around a bit, reltively speaking, without sweating you're abusing the real (and pricey) article.
Find someone who works with Tru Ivory and send the gripframe for proper fitting, insured of course. My experience has been SAAs' gripframes can vary from gun to gun more than any other make. Unless you're confident you can finish-fit or have a friendly smith that "gets" SA grips, that I think is the way to go on a Colt. Tru Ivory lies between micarta and real ivory in cost, closer to the micarta. IIRC, you can get Tru Ivory (also offered by USFA when they were more in the SA biz) in different grades/shades of "age" (look). A friend had a set and they looked/felt great.
Just re-read the OP, sorry--I5 find a friendly local smith or DIY on final fit. I sdmit, sending off a gripframe is a PITA!

Thanks for all the links fellers, i`m leaning towards just leaving the black Colt grips on it as they are cool too.

Re: Fake ivory Colt SAA grips?
Pitchy,
The new mid sized Ruger Black Hawks with the new version of the XR3 grips use the same shape and locating pin location as the Colt SAA.
For some super great American Holley grips contact Cary Chapman at
{ http://www.clccustomgrips.com/ }.
They might take a wee bit of fitting but should work.
Now, just for the record ... here is my Old Model BH with the American Holley grips I had Cary Chapman make for me. I don't baby them and they've held up great.
Something to try.

Went to check out this site and between it wanting to install "unknown/unpublished" software on my computer, I had to close down IE go get out of the loop. Won't be going back, so no matter how good or inexpensive his products are, I won't be spending any money, and would not refer others there either.765x53 wrote:Here are two affordable sources.http://www.gripmaker.com/

Re: Fake ivory Colt SAA grips?
Griff,
Gripmaker is legitimate, and has many beautiful "carved" faux grips - eagles and steers and fake bone and such. I almost purchased from this merchant before settling on plain Holly.
I get no display problems like you did, but I suspect that the site uses Java which caused havoc with your 'puter.
As for J Miller's posting: I was tempted to ask "Are you SURE that Colt and Ruger grips are interchangeable?" But quite frankly I cannot remember Joe ever posting something that he had to retract! Like several others on this site, he knows what he is talking about.
So - here is my list of grip suppliers from my Roboform files, most of whom sell Ruger grips. Maybe one of them will work on the Colt SAA. One or two of these sites are very pricey - real ivory, stag and exotic wood and/or scrimshaw grips. They are beautiful, but over the $200 mark. Too much for me. The rest are what I would call affordable.

Re: Fake ivory Colt SAA grips?
John,
I've been shown wrong more than once and will be the first to retract what I've said and apologize if necessary.
The Ruger XR-3 grips have always been Colt SAA shaped, but the locating pin is in a different location. I have seen grip sets with two sets of holes drilled in them because the were used on both guns.
When Ruger reintroduced the XR-3 grips in 2005 they used the Colt hole location.
Over on The Ruger Forum there have been a number of posts where the new style grips have been used on Colts and clone. And at least one I know of where a set of genuine Colt SAA grips were put on a Ruger.
So it's doable, but with fitting I'll bet.
Joe

Re: Fake ivory Colt SAA grips?
Joe, you make some good observations as usual. I've heard the same about the Colts and Ruger midframes but haven't tested it myself. I'm away from my Colt but will have to try the swap with one of my Ruger NVs--including a set of Carl "Private" Schultz hollys simililar to what I pictured above (which are large/XR3 Red Vaquero).J Miller wrote:John,
