I stumbled into this one today. 1st year (4-digit SN) 1892, 38-40, completely unmessed with. Just a good honest gun, with a 6-7 bore. Receiver is all plum patina, not bare metal, except for blue around the untouched screws. Mag tube and barrel have about 50/50 blue/patina. This is the one caliber I have never owned.
I know a whole lot about very little and nothing about a whole lot.

WOW I am envious, jealous and a few other acronyms I cant think of right now. What stories it could tell.
30/30 Winchester: Not accurate enough fer varmints, barely adequate for small deer; BUT In a 10" to 14" barrelled pistol; is good for moose/elk to 200 yards; ground squirrels to 300 metres
250 Savage... its what the 223 wishes it could be...!

Now ya just need a set of these and some holy black.
Naw, I'm lazy. I just ordered Cowboy dies, Starline brass, and 180gr Laser-Cast bullets. I have plenty of Winchester WLP primers. I also have a full can of 700X and 2400.
Who's got some low/mid power loads, with either 700X or 2400. I'm just range plinking, not hunting.

If I were just starting out in SASS I would choose 38-40. All the nostalgia, seals off good with black and slightly less recoil with the usual 180 grain bullet. Shoots a little flatter than 44-40 too.
That rifle just reeks with character.

One of my favorites and it is a joy to shoot. The recomended load for 2400 is 13.5 grains for the 73 Winchester . I would likely load up 16 myself if your rifle is good and tight and work up if more is wanted. But the faster you drive it the shorter your case life.
I have let down a few deer with my Grandfathers 38WCF and no longer get caught up in paper energy. The 38wcf just plain works!
Great find jdad! Yes, I'm jealous! I hope to find one like that some day. The .38-40 is on my bucket list. I bought a set of RCBS dies in that caliber at a local gun show a couple years back, just planning ahead don't you know...
