POLITICS - Bill Would Ban 'Nightmare’ Weapon (HI)
File this under "Oh, Brother!". Just like Kalifornia, here's a solution to a problem that doesn't exist. Better watch out, Ganjiro, cuz you know it won't stop with this...

Stalled Bill Would Ban 'Nightmare’ Weapon
Honolulu police officer Ronald Taira talked yesterday about the( evil )weapons on display at HPD headquarters. From left, a Barrett .50-caliber semiautomatic, a Remington 700 .308-caliber rifle and an M-4 assault rifle. Law enforcement officials support a bill that would ban .50-caliber guns.
A bill to ban high-caliber rifles in Hawaii is stalled at the state Legislature and has met opposition from local gun advocates.
Although law enforcement officials argue that .50-caliber rifles and ammunition have virtually no place in Hawaii, gun owners maintain they have a constitutional right to the weapon.
Police Chief Boisse Correa and Maj. Gregory Lefcourt said the bill was drawn up as a preventative measure, given the possible damage a bullet of such high caliber can inflict.
"It was designed for the military," Lefcourt said. "People have said they can use this for hunting, but the damage it will do to an animal is so tremendous, it actually vaporizes the area that it strikes."
To draw a comparison, police officials displayed a .50-caliber Barrett sniper rifle and compared it with a Remington .308 rifle and an M4 assault rifle.
Lefcourt said the Barrett would be able to accurately strike a target from the top of the Police Department's downtown headquarters, where yesterday's news conference was held, to the state Capitol, a distance of 0.4 miles.
Lefcourt said gun advocates came out in strong opposition to the bill, and he urged the public to support the measure. The bill has been deferred by the House Judiciary Committee. Judiciary Chairman Tommy Waters could not be reached for comment yesterday.
Police officials also said there are only two ranges in Hawaii that can handle that caliber of weapon, and both are on military grounds.
But Max Cooper, a legislative spokesman for the Hawaii Rifle Association, said guests can be brought to the ranges. The bill would also bar people like Cooper, who has military access because of his prior Army service, from owning and using the rifle.
"They are useful for hunting," said Cooper, adding that the rifles are used for damage control from goats on Oahu.
Lefcourt argued that a bullet could take down a plane if it struck a fuel tank and that it could also strike a refinery from a great distance.
"It's virtually impossible to shoot down an airliner," Cooper said. "We have an expert who testified that you're much more likely to have an airliner brought down with a lightning strike."
Lefcourt said there are 125 registered .50-caliber rifles in Hawaii, with 90 on Oahu. Police said no major incidents on Oahu were tied to the rifle, and hope to prevent future incidents.
"We talk about it being a concern," Correa said, "but it really gives us nightmares."

Kinda sounds like Hawaii is the next California. Oppression plain and simple. I'm a 50 cal shooter and have been for a few years. I don't see any differance between a 50 and any other gun. These are just things for hunting and shooting. Just goes to show you people fear what they don't understand.

Interseting that they want to ban "former military" from owning them too. Like we've said before, it's NOT gun control, it's citizen control.
I suppose that clown thinks HE'S the only one that should be allowed to shoot one?
HI has had liberal politicians for a while now. Probably the rich liberals from here migrating westward.

Hawaii has been very, very liberal for a long time now, from Sen. "In No Way's" opposition to the Second Amendment to the longstanding tolerance of a racial double standard where Euro-Americans like my sister who lives there can be called a "haule" (the Hawaiian equivalent of the "n" word applied to Euro-Americans) multiple times a day yet anything said criticizing any Hawaiian politician by a Euro-American is deemed "racially motivated."
My sister had to send her youngest son away to school on the mainland because the taunting and harassment he endured got to be so much.

It seems the honorable LEO's of Hawaii have forgotten that they do NOT have the authority to tell citizens which guns they may own - but rather in the U.S. it is the other way around - those LEO's should be stripped of ALL their firearms, and required to beg the citizens for permission to have them back. Maybe the citizen wants the LEO to go to bank robberies without anything but a baseball bat; THAT is their right. No wonder it is so hard for some folks to respect the law, or LEO's, when some of them act like these idiots.

I was stationed at Schofield Bks for 2 years back in early 70's........At no time did I feel welcome, unless I was spending money. That Aloha Spirit just was not meant for GI's at the time.....

As far as leaning liberal you are most correct. I see this as a big swing "left" by the way these Islands peoples (Hawaiian, Chinese, Japanese, Philipino, Portugeuse etc.) were treated by the American military along with republicans/business/land grabbers way back when, and is taking forever (if ever) to turn around. Add a bunch of smoke & mirrors by BOTH parties out here and you have a real mess.
Now some may read into this "blame America" or claim that Hawaii would be a greasy spot on the map (Japanese/Pearl Harbor) had America not laid claim to these Islands. Those discussions are not my intention, I just want to share an observation that when a people or land is conquered through war or a sly overthrow, the people will swing WAY left when given the opportunity. I think of this when I see my Country practice it's foreign policy. Something to think about. My own observations.
Fear of republicans and fear of democrats, works both ways.
And yes the "victim disarmament" laws are quite insane here. That may actually change for the better as our meth problem grows.
At any rate the Islands and peoples of Hawaii (and food!) are to me a great blessing to any who take the time to get know them, truly special. Yes the government is pathetic out here but there really is Aloha spirit with hauoles Kanakas and all, people is people.
Oh yeah, and I just got 2 February tomatoes from our backyard compost pile! No greenhouse! A .50 would be just the thing to keep the pigs off 'em! .....mmmmm smoke meat...

Sorry for your sisters and her boys troubles. I am a hauole living in this state since 1989. Myself, my hauole family (kinda, my step-sons are Hawaiian/Kanaka Maoli) and friends don't have a problem with the term hauole. Maybe 2 or 3 out of the hundreds of people I've met living here have a problem with the term. It's when hauole is proceeded by other words it becomes a concern. A big blessing living in Hawaii is it's diverse peoples (and food!), another big blessing is living in areas where you are in the minority, it drives home the fact their are good and bad people everywhere and it don't make a lick of difference the color of your skin, religion, or how many vowels in your name!Hawaii has been very, very liberal for a long time now, from Sen.
