OT - Contemplation !
Think I'm gonna put together a light bench/varmint gun of sorts !
Wanna build it on a Ruger #1 action , stock and foream then use a Lilja or Shilen barrel in thickness somewhere from a magnum weight to varmint weight and 26" !
Now comes the major part of my contemplation !
I can't decide whether I want a plain old 22 or 6mm PPC . Or possibly a slightly faster and almost as accurate 22 or 6mm BR !
Then I think perhaps either of those cases necked up to 6.5mm .
And also a WSSM in possibly 223 , 243 or 6.5mm !
I'm thinking a 6mm PPC is probably gonna be the best way to go .

Re: OT - Contemplation !
This one may take a long amount of deliberation on my part !
I just happen to have a brand new Clymer reamer for the 6.5-06 !
A nice Ruger #1B with a carbon steel barrel the same contour as a magnum weight Ruger barrel in that caliber would be nice as well ! Although not as good for a bench gun![Rolling Eyes ](./images/smilies/icon_rolleyes.gif)

Re: OT - Contemplation !
But then that gets me thinking of the 6.5mm-300WSM or the 6.5mm REM ULTRA MAG !
I expect the best thing to do would be build 2 or 3 rifles![Surprised :o](./images/smilies/icon_surprised.gif)

But if you meant the 223 REM that ain't ever gonna happen !
I'd go with a 222 REM or 222 REM MAG before that
![Exclamation :!:](./images/smilies/icon_exclaim.gif)
Nothing personal but the 223 REM has never been my cup of tea , however with that being said I've had a pair of Remington 700VS in that caliber that easy 1/2 MOA shooters .

Re: OT - Contemplation !
I have read a bunch about the accuracy of the 222 Remington. It sounds to me as if it would be a great caliber choice. Small calibers are fun to shoot at targets or prairie dogs.

Re: OT - Contemplation !
I think a .338 Federal would be pretty darned cool:
Some of the .338 bullets have extremely high ballistic coefficients
You can load it down to just-subsonic ranges and it is quiet, could be suppressed
A higher power level than the bench-6mm's, but think if it as a more practical .338 Whisper.

The following are all perspective at the moment !
22 PPC
22 BR
6mm PPC
6mm BR
6.5mm PPC
6.5mm BR
6.5mm WSSM

Plus I prefer to stick with the older Marlin's for the most .
However I certainly do apprecatte you thinking of me and sending the link !
Actually a FACTROY Ruger #1A or #1S in 444 Marlin would get me intrested !

Re: OT - Contemplation !
Aw, just get the 26" medium barreled Ruger #1 7MM Rem Mag
I shoot the 139gr Hornady Superformance in it.(turns varmits, any size into red pile of fur/meat dust way way out there)
Muzzle Vel--3240fps and when sighted in at 200yds only drops 32" at 500yds (tad better than the .264 Win Mag I had)
And the kicker is it does it with no more kick/muzzle blast(least kicking gun with most butt kicking I ever shot?)

They make the 6.5 Creedmore in the 1A and 1V .
And it's still fairly easy to get a Davidson's Special run 1A in 6.5x55 .

I'd go with a .225 Winchester just because it's weird, and so am I, and I like rimmed cartridges in single shots.

Or... a .219 Zipper is cool since it can be made from 30/30 brass.

Re: OT - Contemplation !
What nice ideas to contemplate, 6pt. I have a 6mm BR loaded up and sitting on my loading bench, reminding me I still want to get a lever gun (92 win style) to shoot it. As loaded with the bullet stuck out where it belongs it is a full 1/4" too long to work thru a normal 92-style action like my Rossi.
But in the Ruger that would be no issue. That'd be my vote...
And Ji, when you get to building your dream rifle, go ahead and stock up on the 225s when you find them (Winchester makes a run of them every few years). It is quite a lot stouter brass than the Improved Zippers you make out of 30/30 brass. I shortened a zipper die just so I could run 225s far enough in to squeeze down the base area so they'd chamber in my zipper, just because of the higher quality brass. Although I don't have any real big complaint about the stuff I made from 30/30 brass: it's just that it starts exhibiting slightly sticky extraction at rather modest pressure levels.

I have a friend that already has a heavy octagon barreled #1 in 22 BR . I've shot that one and it shoots pretty darn well I might add ! I think the 5 shot one hole group I shot with his was around .43" ! For awhile that was the best group shot with his rifle and then he finally beat me a couple months ago !earlmck wrote:What nice ideas to contemplate, 6pt. I had a 6mm PPC in a Ruger 77VT a few years back ! That was a factory gun and with Berger 62 grain bullets I shot quite a few groups under .3" !
I expect the 6mm PPC is gonna be the one "to start" with !

I fully understand what you're saying !
However...........................
With a bench gun cheap brass isn't an issue . Whatever I decide to build if I go thru with it , I'll get 100 pieces of match brass (IE Lapua , Norma or Nosler) and that shud be enough to last me a good long while !

Re: OT - Contemplation !
I just noticed something today that just might skirt the whole custom rebarrel thing for me !
Seems Ruger saw fit for this year atleast to make the #1V in 6.5mm Creedmore !
That just might be what I want for a bench/varmint gun !
And as always if the inclanation hits me (and it will) I can LEGALLY kill a deer with it during hunting season !
