OT - We put down the rifles and picked up the rods

Post by 86er »

CRS and I got out on the lake for some crappie fishing before the summer pattern begins. Using nothing but black/chartreause Rocky Tops we managed to put 40 in the boat in 3 hours and change. Several were over 14 inches and 2 pounds. This is Lake Lavon, an Army Corp of Engineers Property.

Congratulations on a nice catch guys! I have never been partial to the flavor of freshwater fish finding them to be bland and flavorless as a rule but two notable exceptions are the Crappie, and the Yellow Perch both of which I found very tasty preferring them over Rainbow Trout. I've caught some big fish in the salt over the years but my favorite form of fishing is using light tackle on panfish, I could do this all day and night.

Just out of curiosity have any of you fished for the freshwater Redfish found in Lake Calaveras just outside (SW) San Antonio? Friend sent me this video, and it looks like fun: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JKpXivs1XEA

we did the same thing yesterday...
but we went after bass, caught a few with top water baits...in thick fog...
and found a 9 pound bass floating....half eaten by turtle and such...
cant believe a gator has not found him....

spec or crappie season has already passed here...waters are getting warm

Despite what some might say, my head is not that much bigger than Joe's! THe picture was taken as I was leaning toward the camera while laboring to get the old joints to let me kneel down for the pictures. Also, the picture was aimed a bit high and a lot of the fish are not in the picture. :(

I will do a separete post on how good those crappie filets were last night. :D

Scratch the dinner report - the post was lost earlier today.

That photo reminds me that I've been thinking of getting out my fly rod and heading down to the river at the end of the Alfalfa field to see if I can catch some Brown Trout.

Crappie are the best eating freshwater fish there is in my book.I do like catfish if caught in
clear water and trout arn't bad if they are caught in cold mountain waters. My best crappie fishing was in southern Kansas in a little creek fishing with a bobber and live minows.I hooked 8-10 crappie and their wasn't one under 2 pounds.
