Who has a Marlin 1897!

Post by RIHMFIRE »

Who has a Marlin 1897?
I had a pretty fair piece in my hands today...
It had the typical handling marks...octogon barrel
good wood, frosted barrel with decent rifling and decent blueing
similar to this one

whats it worth

$500 max. unless it actually has some sort of "visible" case coloring left, on the receiver, lever, & hammer.

The one you've referenced isn't worth anywhere near the $600 opening price, with that screw in the top of the receiver.

'97s need a 39S bolt to shoot hi-speed .22s, otherwise it's standard velocity only.

Mike I think you meant a 39A bolt. ............or a late production 39 "HS" bolt.

Well, I have one. But you knew that.

I'm totally guilty of being Marlin ignorant, but I do have a pretty nice 1897 down at the ranch. Like many other projects it has been sitting around waiting for it's turn.

they can be quite valuable. my favorite 22 ever is this marlin 1897 : 28" tapered octagonal barrel, half magazine, fancy pistol grip checkered wood, factory vernier target tang sight etc. very accurate especially with target ammo:

if i could have only one 22 this would be the one. can put ten shots under a half dollar easily at 50 yds even with my eyes.

One of the 1897's I still have is the same configuration as yours, but for a 26" barrel and it dates to 1899. Yours appears to be a post 1908 Model '97 based on the "new style" ejector assembly and Hepbun holes.

I've got a couple. As jdad said, the one at Gunbroker isn't worth much more than about half the starting price. He'll never sell it if he doesn't drop the start to around $300.
