OT--Arrow making

Last year while we were on vacation traveling around the country we went to some old forts and i seen some original arrows that had steel points on them.
So you know me, had to make one, hope ya like it.

Point is cut from a old reciprocating hacksaw blade.



Shaft is Cedar.

First i made a sa[url] cut in the shaft for the point



Fit the point in the slot with apoxy.





Then i wrapped the arrow with sinew and tied.









Cut a notch in the other end, being sure to cut accross grain so it doesn`t split out.



Feathers are glued on then wrapped like the point at each end, these are Peacock wing feathers.



Finished.

Pretty neat. Where I lived in Costa Mesa there was a archery place; one of the guys there was into the handmaking of everything. Me... buy the shafts with the scew-in points... had the shop mount the nocks and fletching. All the work I wanna do is pulling the string!

But... ya gotta admire a man that does it all himself!

Thanks Griff, i buy most my arrows too but had to give making one a try.
I shoot compound and long bow, would be neat to harvest a deer with this arrow.

Very nice work. You say you used sinew, but it looks like the artificial sinew (nylon). I have some of that also. I used to coat mine with a thin coat of epoxy once it was wrapped.

How did you cut the recip saw blade?

Pitchy, no, that's not my cabin. It's one not far from Wind's place. It just looked cool sitting out there by it's lonesome covered in snow.

with all natural materials....just as they did long ago....

I`m not Griff but i can tell ya that i cut the points out with my chop saw holding with vice grips, use causion if you try that.
The sinew is artificial and yep i coat with super glue when done to keep things together.

They shoot great, made three, two with turkey feathers and this one with peacock.

No problem , i finish them up and sharpen with a sanding wheel in my side grinder.

I love seeing do it yourself Archery tackle, keep it up Pitchy , great stuff. I've been making my own Traditional Gear since the early 90's. I love the whole rediscovery/relearning of skills from the past.

Thanks Gents, what really amazed me was the number of steel points we seen on old arrows from the past, they must of used steel from what ever they could find. Must of took a lot of grinding with a stone to shape them unless they new a good blacksmith.
