OT: But on the topic of .303 Wildcats - the .416 Strauss

Post by Bruce Scott »

How's this?
Image

"The parent cartridge is the .303 British. It is blown out to .416 caliber and loaded with a 300 grain Barns-X or 350 grain Speer bullet and S265 Pistol powder (a local South African powder). The 350 grain bullet is propelled at 2300 fps and generates 4112 ft/lbs of muzzle energy. The lighter bullet is pushed out at 2500 fps and generates 4164 ft/lbs of muzzle energy."

It is being used in a rifle built on the P14 action.

I imagine that it is much like the .405 Winchester in terms of capability in the appropriate action.

It is amazing that brass cases can be "blown-out" so much and stay uniform enough to be strong. Amazing stuff...

Forgive me Bruce - somewhat of a tangent

I found that link when I was researching my Rifle, cetainly an interesting option I would love to explore. I enquired about converting my SMLE action to .444 Marlin and .375/303 and kept bumping into the same problem . The SMLE and No4 magazine is designed to feed a tapered case. Necked up beyond .358 and feeding becomes unreliable and expensive to get working as the shoulder all but disappears. Also the .303 case looses it's shoulder altogether when necked up to .375 and can cause a larger than chamber bulge which sometimes needs case reaming or turning. A P14 action is much less trouble and feeds them all reliably. I

I'd love to see that .416 Strauss in action

Just for interest here's a photo of my 303.35 cartridge to show how little shoulder remains when necked up

An easy .303 Wildcat I uncovered is to shorten a set of 30.06 dies, run .303 cases through the die and you get a .303 Confederate Sabre. It keeps the tapered case of the .303 but gains the 30.06 shoulder. Chamber is simply running a 30.06 reamer in short.. Will work with most of the 30.06 variants - 35 Whelen, 270, 25.06 etc and feeds through our beloved SMLE & No4 Mk1

Jacko are dies for the 35/303 and 375/303 easy to get there? Even though we here in Canada have tons enfields you don't see much in the way of wildcatted ones. The 303 improved was fairly popular at one time. I'd like to do one of my old No1 Mk4's in a 22-303 or 6mm-303 for varmint hunting.
