Roll crimp this bullet?? (pic)

Post by Topside »

Howdy All, These bullets were free. I want to plink with'em. They are 158 gr. for 38/357. I read somewhere ....don't roll crimp a bullet unless it has a cannelure/crimp groove. Should I follow that advice or crimp away? I'll be loading with Starline .357 brass. Thanks,

T.

I've roll crimped bullets just like that without any issues, but a taper crimp is just as simple, and I haven't had any issue with set-back or anything else.

Are those evil Democrat bullets? (this is in the "political" section after all)?

I roll crimp most of my cast bullet, either pistol or rifle. Just a little at the shoulder of that bullet will do just fine.

When I have a bullet like that I seat them deep enough to crimp over the top. You may have to reduce the powder charge a bit with harder bullets pushed to near maximum. Those look swaged and I'll bet they are pretty soft so you're not likely to get them moving very fast before leading. That keeps them from moving forward under recoil in revolvers. I have enough case tension to keep them from pushing deeper with my dies(leverguns) so that's never been a problem.

Those are Hornady 158gr HPSWCs. They are swaged and soft.
I seat them to the normal OAL for a factory bullet of that type and roll crimp right into the side of the bullet.
I have close to a 1000 of them loaded right now.

One suggestion, go buy some Lee Liquid Alox lube and coat those bullets with it. Hornady's factory lube sux like a Hoover.

In other words let it protrude about like a SWC then crimp right into the lead. Also, these are very good consistant bullets. Years ago I used the hollow base version for a falling plate game. They are very accurate but don't push them fast. As Joe said they are swaged not hard cast and will lead if pushed hard.

Thanks for all the info. Nice to have the bullet ID'd. Diameter is roughly .385. Pictured below is info. on cowboy action loads taken from a little free booklet I had from IMR Powders. I've got some Trail Boss I normally use in 45 colt loads. You all identified these bullets as Hornady 158gr HPSWC. From what you all have contributed, I'm thinking I'll try 3.2 gr. (opinions welcome) of Trail Boss, roll crimp at the shoulder which will put OAL at 1.59". In the chart below.....this is a tame recipe which suits me fine.
One suggestion, go buy some Lee Liquid Alox lube and coat those bullets with it. Hornady's factory lube sux like a Hoover.

Joe
Is the Alox still recommended at this velocity of 754 fps? MANY THANKS ALL.

At that velocity even a bare nekked bullet with a dusting of that "sucky" lube they use on one out of five of em would be ok. It's when ya push em they start to strip lead.

My favorite load with that bullet is 4.3grs of 231. And yes even at that slow velocity I'd coat 'em with LLA.

And keep in mind, the velocity will go up if you use them in a rifles. My plate load was 3 gr of Hercules Bullseye in a 38 case.

Thanks again guys. Forgot to mention, these are for my NM Blackhawk only. Sadly I traded my Puma .357 for Marlin Cowboy 45 Colt so I'm out of .357 rifles. Miss that little Puma.

I'd crimp the case myself but... Those bullets will handle a roll crimp just fine, just don't over do it.
