Williams sight insert choices
I have a Williams receiver sight on my Winchester 94 that I think is the .093" sized hole. I'd like to go with a smaller one for a little better accuracy and am not sure which one to go with. Can anyone tell me if the "Twilight" apertures are really any better than a standard black one? Here is a twilight type:
And a standard type (both with .050" holes):

Markbo,
The only difference between those two apertures is the brass ring. During the daylight you'll probably never notice it. The twilight aperture is designed to show up ... at twilight.
You don't really see the aperture anyway as your supposed to look through it not at it.
Williams and Lyman send out their sights with two apertures. I don't remember the sizes of the holes. I always use the one with the larger hole for general shooting. When I'm sighting in, or wanting a really fine sight picture I have one with a pin hole in the center and a 1/2" dia disc. That works great.

Yes, they are substantially better. I use one on my 1894 Marlin. I don't know the opening size.
I thought about trying to make my own by using paint or trying to rub off the blueing from a regular one, but they're inexpensive, and I figured that if I didn't like it I could just blacken the gold ring with a bit of paint.

If you plan on hunting with this type of sight, going below the .093 will probably cause you some problems in low light conditions. I have tried and quit using the brass ringed ones because of the glare they sometimes cause. If you need the occasional smaller ring for intense accuracy purposes, go with the Merit Adjustable aperture. Just be sure you open it up before you go hunting. If you can, try an 03-A3, Garand or AR 15 type rifle before going smaller and I think you will stay with what you have.

I have ARs and have used the open sights. I find even the smaller sights on them a bit crude and would like something tighter. I might have to look into the Merit adjustable.
Re: Williams sight insert choices
I hunt dark timber and use the twilight peep in .93 and .125 they work great. The smaller regular peeps work fine for sighting in. danny
Re: Williams sight insert choices
The brass one is easier to see in twilight for target shooting, but IMO is not needed for hunting to 100 yds. I remove the aperture when hunting under 100 yds. The twilight is not needed for ranges past that as if it's dark enough to need the aperture, it's too dark to see game past 100.

With my bad eyesight, maybe I can just duct tape a scope to the side of the action.

Merit Corporation has a peep insert you can have your optometrist fit a lens to.

I actually use one of those stick on units when shooting handguns from a rest for accuracy. They do definitely help. But in the field I don't think they are a good idea at all.
I am probably going to try the Merit sight insert since it has a wide range of adjustability. Just a little insurance against losing an insert in the field if I want to make a change, you know.

Re: Williams sight insert choices
Perhaps it is a subjective thing, but I have never been able to detect the slightest advantage to the "Twilight" aperture. A bigger-diameter hole, yes; but IMO the brass ring is one of those "here's-something-that-SOUNDS-so good-we-think-you'll-buy it" things. As the light dims, go to a larger hole, or remove the aperture altogether and use the ghost ring.
