Winchester Classic 94 30-30 Octagon barrel

Post by jkbrea »

Anyone have one? I'm looking at one made in '82 but have never shot one. I like the looks. How do they compare with a "regular" 94?

The Winchester Classic Model 94 that I am familiar with was made from 67-70 and came with an octagon barrel in two lengths. 20" for carbine and 26" for the rifle. The shot very good. IIRC Numrich's has/had replacement barrels.

I like the looks too - They're very nice looking rifles IMHO.

Part of the reason they lokk so nice, besides the octagon barrels, is that the roll-engraved receivers are black chromed, and not blued - something to keep in mind if one is intended for a using rifle.

The black chrome will flake/chip out from receiver & hole edges, if care isn't taken using tools. etc. around them - like when installing a receiver peep sight in the factory prep holes.

The internals, however, are the samo-samo junko post-64 stamped parts ( and roll pins) that Winchester used 1964-71. (Carrier/lifter, etc)
I switched out the internals of most every 1964-70 M94 that I owned to a post-71 cast lifter & solid pins, etc, for reliability.

I personally preferred the 20" octagon barreled version, as I thought the longer version too long/heavy for the type of woods hunting I do. YMMV, of course.

.

I didn't know about the date. I looked it up on a website. Must have mistyped it. It was 311xxxx.
Also Pete44ru, I didn't know about the black chrome. That's why I love this site. Learn something new everyday.
If I buy it, I will definitely switch out the lifter and roll pins.

I collected the Classic at one time and found the Original Winchester catalogs that have them included. They actually seemed to shoot better than the average 94 for me. I did recently see one that looked like first rate junk. The barrel had milling marks that can not be acurately described other than real bad. All the other Classic's that I have seen had good workmanship.
