Thank you for the tutorial. It was very informative as I've always wanted to try my hand at making at least one. Looks great.

One thing I did not cover is the use of fresh horn. That is one right off of the cow. The horn is over a core of bone and tissue. You need to seperate that core/tissue from the horn as soon as possible. You do not have to, but it will surely smell better if you do. You can leave it outside protected from animals and it will eventually come apart and then you can scrub the inside with soapy/hot water until you get it clean or --- you can take the fresh horn and boil it until it seperates and then use the bottle brush to clean the inside (highly recommended).

Fresh horn will have some degree of scales on the outside also. If you boil it, that is a good time to take a file/knife and remove the scales. If you get one that has seperated from the core, but has the surface scales, you can just soak it in water a few days and then file/scrape off the rough portion. You can file/scrape it without soaking it if you desire.

When working with goat type horns, I recommend you do not try to smooth the outside - that would be more work than I can imagine.

Now, if someone gets an excess of Longhorn or Highland cow horns - just call me.

One other issue needs to be covered. If you do create a horn based on this thread - please post and let us see it.

Bruce, Thank you for your time and thank you for sharing the knowledge you have. In one of your posts on the first page, you mentioned an open throat. Do you have any pictures of one, and why would the purpose of one be?

Next, we have some decisions to make. Should we put another ring in?

Should we use a half round rough cut file and put a dish in?

Should we use the edge of the rough cut file to make the grooves square instead of round?

Should we use the extremely rough cut file to make this a exposed throat like a few of the earlier horns?

Tell me what you think/want and we will proceed.

The exposed throat is the top one in the picture below.

I use a rough cut file to make a larger than normal ring in the throat area. Hope this explains it.

got it, thanks. I was thinking the air way was opened some how so that the operator had to cup with his hand or finger to seal in order to blow.

Scott,

It was just my southern english way of explaining things I do to a horn when I have too many files laying nearby.

It's kinda like, hey - I wonder what it would look like if I did this to it ?? Now that looks OK, what do I want to call it?

Gabby,

For a processed horn - one that has been cleaned and buffed up a little like the one we used in this project - expect to pay from $10 to $20 depending on the length. Remember to be careful of buying/using horns from out of country, especially stuff from the area of India. They are sometimes weak, thin and brittle.
