Informal SoCal Shoot Sunday, Dec. 27th

Post by CowboyTutt »

Hey guys, I'm down in SoCal for the holidays again. Old Savage, Jim Williamson, El Chivo and myself are planning on going shooting on Sunday, Dec. 27th at the Angeles Range. We will be on the public rifle range to the left where you can shoot 100-600 yards which is a rarity among shooting ranges. There is also a nice reloading store on the premises so bring some cashola! We will be meeting for breakfast at a place just off the freeway and west of the range prior to shooting. PM me for more details on that.

If BSAride or 71Fan are around, it would be nice to see you again. Anyone is of course welcome to join us.

I know Jeremy Reed will be there in spirit.

I have my 71/84 Mauser named "Old 3120", my McPherson built 454 Puma with its stretched action, and my Kimber 10mm 1911 and S&W 460 snubbie with me.

Jim is bringing his McPherson Marlin in a stretched 357 mag that has also been lightened up and is easy to shoot. He will also have his Mauser, a 10mm S&W and I'm not sure what else.

Again, anyone on the forum, you are welcome to join us.

Merry Christmas to Everyone!

The Saddle Ring Studs ride again...

I forget the name of the Cafe, but it's at Foothill Blvd and Little Tujunga Rd.

Have to do some reloading on Christmas!

I would like to come.

I should get in some work hours, but that can be done Saturday.

I need to sight in a few rifles (two if delivery isn't before then on one rifle).

Winchester 94AE in 44 Mag
Marlin 1893 30-30

If it shows up, I'm getting a Marlin 62 in 30 carbine sometime soon.

Don't think I have time to work on the Savage 99 but it needs sighting in as well.

Send me the info too.

BSA, I'll be doing some paper shooting and sighting in too. Just bring them as is, and we will get it sorted out! The resteraunt that no one remembers the name of is the something Cafe on the north side of the intersection. Nothing else there so hard to miss. I will try to find out the name of it. Very good food.

I'll post the exact breakfast time but I anticipate about 830am or 9am. What works for you guys?

OK, went by the candy store and picked up my 1959 M18 4 inch Smith.
Told the guy to expect the M62, he said he just checked it in 1/2 hr ago
and it came in without a buyers name. The bad news is I don't get it until
Dec 31st (won't have it for the shoot). The good news is I get it Dec 31st.

Weather forcast looking OK so far. Partly cloudy, thats all. I guess we won't have to raise the sights so high (when the sun is low (cloudy), shoot low. When the sun is high, shoot high).

OK, made some calls. The resteraunt is called the Ranch Side Cafe. They are located at 11355 Foothill Blvd. Their phone is 818 834-0031. The food is very good there. What time Sunday am guys?

I'm not a morning person so I will let others pick the time.
Usually up by 7:30 and it's about 45 minutes to an hour drive for me.

Jay, I have to tell you, if you're usually up by 7:30, you're a morning person.

If I'm up before 11 it's a miracle.

It's a very long shot for me. We have a house full of family in for the holidays so it would be a bit awkward for me to leave for a day. OTOH, I really want to go, so I've already started working on the boss/wife. Anyway, you guys have a wonderful time and I will be there in spirit alongside Jeremy.

OK, just a little weather update. Its changed some, with a 20% chance of rain. The firing line is very well covered so no big deal. Might not rain at all. It will probably be a bit chilly in the am with a high of 54 degrees for the day, so bring those shooting jackets!

Jim and I will get there a little after 830 for some coffee and conversation and breakfast will be ordered at 9am for those who are coming. Hopefully that works for everyone!

I have been assigned the task of sighting in two 60s era guns, 88 and 99 with scopes. Love it.

Doesn't look like I can make it.

Computer crashed and have to stay here and monitor email.
The dead one is for work and I was planning to work all weekend.
If my computer guy contacts me then I may be able but not holding my breath.
Pick up the M62 30 carbine on the 31st so next weekend would be better for me
anyhow or even the 9th or 10th of January.

Hi BSA, I'm leaving SoCal next Saturday so can't do any of those other days. I think we have a few people lined up for tomorrow (about 5). I'll be down over the summer so we can try to get everyone together then. I'm sorry you can't make it! :(

Well it was one of those great Southern California days, sort of halfway between brisk and balmy, clear, no wind. Nice, leisurely breakfast with a great bunch of guys. I was working on final groups for some 35 Rem lead loads, I got best results with IMR 4227. I was working on short range stuff, while the rest of the group were knocking the 400 and 600 yard gongs.

Then I had the privilege of shooting Old Savage's old Savage, this was a very balanced, steady rifle. I also got to shoot a Swiss Army rifle with a spiral bolt.

Another great day, thanks guys, see you next year.
