Spent a week in the Smokey Mountains with family and friends.

Built a 1 acre farm pond and had a free-flowing artesian well dug to feed it.

Finally went to the dentist for a checkup (it had been 12 years since my last one).

and

Thanked the Good Lord every morning and every night for my family and our health. :D

The kids have thier fort under the trampoline

and that is whats left of my cat we were pushing snow back off the shoulder of the road because therte was no where else to go with it! It dropped the water in to the oil and took out a rod bearing. It looks perty lonly does it not?

farming this year was good. great crop average or less $$ but still did ok.

family is healthy and thats all that counts.. Too busy for hunting this year(Late spring late harvest) Last winter was too hard on the wildlife so I told the kids we need to let them grow in numbers this year. well'll go next year when there is more game.

killed a one-legged rascal of a crow with a flint smoothbore
sold a Marlin 1894 .38-40
NEVER HAD THE TOP OFF THE JEEP

Sounds like you will have EGGS, MILK, CHICKEN, Goat-meat (the 'veal' version of whitetail deer), and perhaps even some chevre cheese, PLUS plenty of manured bedding to till into the tomato patch, and some bug-and-weed-seed-eaters to turn loose under the fruit trees in summer, and into the garden in the winter. 8)

What have I done this year ..... not much.  :( Lots of health issues this year. Always something.

About the only enjoyable thing we've done is go to the Leverguns meet in IN last July. Was hoping for another one.

Still got some of this year left.

rafter-7,
Sorry about the Cat, hope it's fixable.

I'm completing my second year of retirement (loving every minute) and I got myself back into leverguns after several decades absence with the purchase of new 3 rifles.
* Henry 22lr. carbine
* Rossi 38/357 24" oct. bbl. rifle
* Rossi 38/357 20" rd. bbl. carbine

In addition, this was a big year for us taking advantage of many huge travel discounts.
* Feb. - 2 wks in Costa Rica.
* Apr. - 2 wks drive to N. Calif., down thru Death Valley to Las Vegas, and then home through 4 National Parks.
* Jun. - 1 week cruise via inland passage to Alaska.
* Aug. - 2½ wks cruise in Europe: Budapest, Hungary, up the Danube river through Slovakia and Austria to the Main then Rhine rivers through Germany to Amsterdam, Neatherlands.
* Oct. - 2½ wks cruise in China: Shanghai up Yangtze to Chongquin, fly Xi'an, then y to Beijing.
* Dec. - 1 wk near Cancun, Mexico: Family vacation with the kids. They are getting out of college and starting their own lives so this will likely be the last time the 4 of us vacation together for a long time.

Finally, we got the wife a new '10 Honda CRV EX last week. We couldn't resist the deal plus the 1.9% financing. I got her '02 Tahoe and our son got my '02 Trailblazer when we traded in his old '96 Jeep Cherokee. All three of us got an upgrade as the Tahoe and Trailblazer only had mid 60K miles each and we're all thrilled.

This year's highlight was the shooting spree I went on in eastern Montana. The weekend before fathers day, neighbor Doc and I went to the Big Hill shoot at Baker Mt. Got home from that , reloaded the Sharps ammo, loaded the camping gear, and enough shooting gear for the boys and I to take in the Quigley on fathers day. Picked the boys up at the airport in Billings that thursday, and a good time was had by all. After I left them off at the airport on Monday I headed home and that's when the age we live in probably finally sank in. Me and the ol diesel were cruising along still about 150 miles from home and Marcus was calling from San Diego saying he was almost home, and Bob was just about back home in Mo.....

Anyway after that I got to haying for the first time in several years had enough to bother with starting the equipment up. Got enough hay up to take the cows thru the winter, and then took in some more shoots in August and September.
Guess that's high spots from this year.

I too, am a fan of the big 5-honey. I've pretty much universally switched to the 4 bangers for competition, but this big dinosaur gets a paddle tire pried on a couple of times a year to go to the dunes and jam (what'd you break?)

What have i accomplished ? Its easier to list the "stuff" i've bought. my firearms collection has grown two-fold this year --- in the post Obama ammunition surge, i also took up the hobby of reloading, -- since winter is upon us, i will likely get in a lot of "seat time" in front of the press 'n powder measure soon.

I engage in an occupation that is related to weather patterns as well as supply/demand in specific areas (independent insurance adjuster) --- The year started off very slow so i consider it a small triumph that i was able to stay busy enough throughout the year that i never had to leave my home state and it was nice to be home for the whole year. Hurricane season typically coincides with hunting season, so i havent been able to get out in the woods in some time. It is nice this year to be able to get out and play with some of my firearms and bow --- as usually i am busy writing checks for storm damage during hunting season.
Most people would not consider a slow year an accomplishment, but i have liked it at times. I get to the range a couple of times a month, have had plenty of time for my other hobbies, honey-do's , home improvement projects etc. etc.

Let's see...

Started the adoption process for our first child.
Celebrated my wife's grandma's 90th birthday.
Re-roofed the main house and the rental house.
Installed an outdoor patio kitchen and new sprinkler system.
Bought a new Dodge 2500 diesel pickup when the old F150 started giving up the ghost.
Traded in wife's F150 for a used Subaru wagon.
Bagged 2 wild pigs and several pheasants.
Caught numerous steelhead, rainbows, sockeyes, abalone, and rock crabs.
Sold a Marlin 1895CB & M39 Mosin-Nagant.
Bought a Ruger M77RSI, Single-Six, Uberti 1860 Army C&B revolver
Wife bought a Remington 700 30-06.
Wife had her consulting contracts renewed with the state.
Job position was moved from wireless division, over to the landline division, then back to wireless.
Lost 15 more lbs and 2 inches around the middle.

A good thread as the exercize of listing it has great value.

Lets see, Worked with docs to revamp a failing treatment plan and watched my younger brother go from terminally ill to chronically ill with a future.

Buried another brother way too soon.

Took a very memorable motorycle trip to FL with my oldest son.

Took another trip to FL I'd rather forget, retrieving mom when her progressing dementia rendered her unable to live alone.

Did a LOT of fishing, caught some beautiful largemouths, including an 18"er on a 5wt fly rod (wanna talk FUN!) watched my 15 yr old catch some big fish too. (even more fun).

Designed and built an outdoor fireplace for the patio (gonna build the patio next year) and a masonary heater for the shop.

Put a roof on the house with help from the 15 yr old, saved enough VS hiring it out to justify shop air for the garage and ended the year with some of the "house fund" still intact.

Learned I'm a grandpa of a 15 mo old tyke my son didn't know about until recently. Son and the boy's mom are together again, planning a real wedding soon.....

Building a custom rolling block and participating in an exciting revamp of the Marlin 1894 action.

Built a new MC trailer with a coffin cargo box that was a huge hit at a big rally nearby.

It's been a busy year chock full of surprizes, and it ain't over yet.

Had a spill in a deep clay mud pit at low speed and popped my knee out (Foot stuck in good and then I fell past it). Didn't hurt at all but when I went to stand up the leg was floppy so I had to watch it suck mud and die. Knee popped back in and worked fine after a couple minutes, just a bit of soreness (lucky for me since I was riding alone more than a mile from my truck). Bike needs to be gone through and cleaned, going to put in new bearings, get the cylinder plated (I see some aluminum) etc... while I am in there.

Of particular interest and enjoyment was taking the Goldwing on a 7,000 mile trip to Ohio. I'm not sure I bought any guns this year. Bit the bullet almost a month ago and got a dream truck: F250 SuperDuty w/6.4 Twin Turbo Diesel (and might not get any guns for a couple MORE years  ) I didn't even buy tags this year as I've been hammering out the last few health problems. On insulin now, and have never felt better. Taking a sleep study, and will prolly end up on CPAP mask and that should make a fella sleep and feel better. Hopefully, the next year will find me healthier, lighter and mucho more spry. I'm a lucky fella as I've never had a bunch of really bad stuff happen to me that didn't right itself with a little grit and good luck.

Spent my 42 year of marriage enjoying my wife and watching my grand daughter turn seven, with a little golf, guns and shooting sprinkled in. I look forward to more of the same for 2010 with more time in the woods and along a fishing stream.

It is a little early but this seems like a good thread to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

Good idea for a topic!

Lets see... (I might amend this as the CRS fades in and out. As it is this isn't in any particular order.)

- wife and I took widowed friend to see Lancaster, PA
- wife and I went for weekend to Northern Neck and wife unexpectedly went swimming which meant she got a new cell phone
- hung out with the grand kids but not nearly enough
- took care of Mom and did Mom's business
- found a home for each of Mom's seven cats
- wife and I went to Phoenix for model railroaders convention and rode some more railroads
- wife and I went to Gatlinburg with most of wife's siblings for Thanksgiving weekend
- got some nice guns and built a new ammo shelf which is already full
- wife met JimT (I took care of Mom)
- started project of digitizing all family photos
- I did get to meet a couple of forum members
Sincerely,

Hobie

The right side of dirt sounds pretty good however being in my forties that shouldn't be to hard BUT since someone mentioned surgeries I had 7 more fusions, titanium rods, and bolts put in. My left arm works again and I'm not falling down all the time so things are good! I did manage to purchase a rifle I have been after for a long time, I finally wore him down, I'm sure you no-one would even care or have a clue what it is but I wanted it, it's a thumb trigger 22 and it's not a Winchester. It's near mint from the late 1890's and I only know of one other in a museum so I'm tickled pink!

Well, celebrated my 1 year wedding anniversary, took in a few car shows (and a few trophies), fished with my dad, hunted with my dad, buried my grandpa, set-up the wvstreets.com state meet, and met lots of great people, many are now friends.

I have had a heck of a year. Started off losing my shirt with no job and health problems. Proved the doctors wrong by living past June. Had a tumor removed in May. Got a job doing what I love in August. Started repurchasing some of the many things I lost. Discovered quite recently that work really does get in the way of fun. Can't complain though as teaching can be really fun.

took a trip back home to see my mother and family back at the old homestead, spent two weeks (and took the Greyhound).

Worked on my music website to add new sources of income for it. Got it caught up in other words.

Got hooked on ukuleles and have bought several.

I believe I have come up with an ok 35 Rem load for cast bullet (have more to do but am going to do it before the end of the month) - THIS was a real headache

Took the offensive as things came to a head at work (harassment from boss), got him and his clique chastened and survived.

In general I'm downsizing my life in anticipation of future travel and/or smaller digs. Have sold about $4000 worth of stuff on Ebay. Cleaning house in other words.

Jumped a doe out of bed during deer season, actually one of my favorite moments of the year.

I HOPE to move up in silhouette to AAA in long range, I have one match left and need one more score. If I don't get it this year, I will have to do two such scores next year to qualify.

Old Savage: The question was what did you do this year, not WHO did you do this year.

As for my year, we finally fulfilled a plan that was almost four years in the making -- took a vacation in Europe and visited with a former exchange student we had hosted. We did two weeks and saw Lisbon, Portugal; Seville, Spain; the general area around Recklinghausen (north of Duesseldorf) and Cologne, Germany, with a side trip to Cochem and Trier, Germany on the way to Luxembourg; Luxembourg City; Paris, France, and Rome, Italy. We did the backpack thing, anything we took fit into a carry-on sized backpack. Traveled light like the locals and it was a huge success. A bar of Dial and a 25 ft length of paracord took care of laundry every three days or so. I took five button-down nylon fishing shirts, three trousers (zip-off leg fishing pants), five pairs of underwear and five pairs of socks. One pair of Ecco leather shoes, and one pair of lightweight flip-flops for evening wear around the hotels. One thin Gore-tex rain jacket. My pack weighed 14 lbs, including a small netbook computer and toiletries. I could have made do with three shirts, two trousers, and will do so next time.

We got Eurail passes and used them hard; got a heck of a value in train travel for the $$$ spent on the pass. When in Europe, rail is the way to go for trips of 6-8 hrs or less. We loved it, especially the high-speed TGV (tay-zhay-vay) from Luxembourg City to Paris Gare Est. 221 MILES per hour on the line from Metz to Paris, the same line where the TGV set the world speed record for a train in 2007 - 348 MPH. The TGV cost us an 11-Euro "reservation" fee in addition to our Eurail Passes, for a trip that took 2:08 that would take an auto about 4.5 hrs.

It was great seeing our exchange student and meeting his family. They treated us to a musical in Bochum, Germany; "Starlight Express," written by Andrew Lloyd Webber has been running for 20 years and is the most popular musical in Germany. The also took us to Cologne where we saw the Dom (Cathedral) that Eisenhower ordered the Air Corps to not hit during bombing missions. They didn't. Toured the Lindt chocolate museum, took a boat ride on the Rhine, and did some shopping in a commercial section that reminded me of Times Square for all the people. Ate in some awesome outdoor cafes and restaurants. Although I spoke German, most Germans would respond in English. Some clerks were of Spanish descent, and my daughter spoke spanish to them.

In Paris, we saw the usual suspects: Notre Dame, Tour Eiffel, Louvre, Arc d' Trionphe, Pompidou Center (art museum), the site of the Bastille, Trocadero, and the Palais Versailles. After seeing Versailles, I can understand why the people revolted. Note: The Paris Metro system is WONDERFUL and LOW COST. The best subway I've ever rode on for ease of getting around, definitely beating the Washington, DC Metro and the NYC MTA. NOTE: I will never allow anyone to bash the French people in my presence. The Parisian French were WONDERFUL. I'd always speak French, and in most cases they would respond in English. Restaurants were fantastic.

In Rome, we saw the Palatine Hill, Roman Forum, Coleseum, Victor Emmanuel 1 memorial, Spanish Steps, Pantheon, Trevi Fountain, and of course the Vatican Museum and St. Peters. As it timed out, we entered St. Peters with about 10 mins to spare before 17:00 Daily Mass, and being Catholics we attended Mass and Communion. The actual seating area in the Cathedral is not much more than in a medium sized church in the US. We stayed near the Opera and the Main Train Station and ate at terrific restaurants. Romans were outstanding; even though I spoke Italian to them, most would respond in English.

Everything else this year paled by comparison.

HAD to chime in on this one!
For once, I have actually been able to accomplish something...
In Feb, met a nice lady -> had a dandy time. A couple of weeks back it became obvious it's going to friendship only (suits me), but another has kept "harassing" me so it ain't all too bad. They just have the bad habit of clinging themselves on one's revolver arm.
Changed jobs. Good fortune: The company gave me 10 months' salary as severance pay and less than a week later I started in my new job with approx. 10% better pay. And one month later I noticed the old company had paid in the semi-annual bonus on my account which I thought I lost when taking the severance pack.
Went on a 10-day plains game safari in Zim - FINALLY!! At the same time re-introducing an old friendship.
And, as you all know, bought a Winnie 1895 in 7,62x53R, and had the old one in 8,2x53R customized to suit my needs and tastes.
Shot a moose (and missed another due to sheer bad luck!). And will still be go moose hunting as well as boar/deer hunting. 8)
If I'll be able to sell my Jaguar, nothing more could be hoped for. But what shall I call the high point of the year?

I had to really think on this one to come up with something and once I did, I realized I had accomplished more than I thought.

Lost 10-15lbs mainly due to being outside a lot more entertaining the good puppy dog, cutting back on the junk and getting more exercise at work (more on that below).

Got a new shop at work which is roughly 10X larger than my old one. Literally. The old place was just an 8'x10' break room converted into the repair shop. In OCT we finished moving to a new building and now my shop is roughly 100'x10'. When they told me I would be able to hook up 30 units at once I told them "Yeah, but you still have only one tech!" The increased space means I do a LOT more walking around than I used to. I now have those tight glutes the ladies are always wishing they had...

Learned to do more stuff around the house and on the cars rather than paying someone else to do it, including brake jobs. Well OK, it was just changing disc brake pads but still....

Read volume one of P.O. Ackley's Handbook for Shooters and Reloaders. Didn't comprehend 90% of the technical stuff, but I read it! Volume two is on the list after I finish H.W. McBride's A Rifleman Went to War (about halfway through that one).

Sold a large part of my collection to help dig out of a hole we're in. Sounds like bad news BUT there's a pro to it: I found a lot of the stuff I thought I was so attached to and would never part with wasn't that important. I found what I actually use/have a use for and what I WANT were two totally different things. I now know what I can live with and the want list is VERY short when better days come around.

I've made a conscious effort to be a better person but that's quite an undertaking and the project has a ways to go.

Finally, a couple of months ago I had what I can only describe as an awakening of faith. I've never been an atheist but I've never been the strongest follower either. It dawned on me one day that I was looking to the Lord for guidance even when things were going good instead of the usual "Why me?" when a situation went south. The more I thought about it, this started back in '07 when it was clear Mom was in the final stages of ovarian cancer and there was no turning back but it never really coalesced until a couple of months ago. Heck, I've even been to church a few times and that's quite a feat for me. Contrary to my post count here and other places (not to mention the novella this post has turned into  ) I'm not the most talkative, social person. It drives my social butterfly wife nuts...
Nothing so needs reforming as other people's habits.

I need to rub all you guys back fer a leetle luck! Lets see: Wife did a little painting and I watched it dry. Wrote some checks for various repairs on our vacant rental. Spent the 1st half of summer attempting to fix a almost unfixable rideing mower. I would have rather buy two new ones. Spent the fall cleaning up the vacant rental. Made a bunch of visits to the doctor and dentist between the wife and me. I tried to "inspire" some extended family members. Read maps for about a hour every night. Type lies and fanticys on the computer about 6 hours a day on various gun sites. Try to hit one of all three resturants in town at least once a day. Listen to Rush in the morning, followed by Shawn in the afternoon. Maybe Savage every few evenings if I can find the time. Once a week listen to Beckers political views. Old Savage might pick up on that one! Monday evenings I set the garbage out.

Busy year from a work standpoint. The company I work for bought another (a large industry participant, competitor, and customer all in one), and my job changed dramatically throughout the year. I've spent the last 3 months in darn-near constant pain, had back surgery, and I am now on the road to recovery. I'm blessed with a supportive and loving family, great friends, a job that is flexible with great medical insurance, talented and caring doctors. Can't ask for more.

God Bless you all - Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Rolled up 31 years with the wife.

Paid off my homestead in just 2 1/2 years.

Built a huge front porch.

Built a nice henhouse.

Paid off the truck.

Fell some trees and started clearing for a garage next summer.

After some reflection, I've done quite a bit this year. But I'm proudest of this (so far):
100_0987 (web).jpg
My eldest daughter, who is soon to leave the nest, and her fiance spent Father's Day with me at the Quigley Shoot. I think we scored a 47...if you added all our scores together.

Later this month my wife and I get to celebrate our silver anniversary. She's probably wanted to use a silver bullet on me a time or two.
If I survive till then it will be an accomplishment as well.

Ok, let's see....

Slept on the couch for the second year. Daughter moved in with no notice and I barely got out of the way.
Good news is it's paid off as she will move out in a week into her first home.

Got my ameteur radio license.

Bought ameteur radio stuff.

Bought guns, some ammo, shot some.

Ask me again next year, lot's more planned after I get my garage back (daughters stuff don't ya know).

I've survived the year, so far, but there times when I wonder if that was a worthwhile accomplishment.

After a very rocky start for the year, my 19 year mariage ended in divorce.

On the good side, I moved back to Alabama and can look after my aging Mother.

Since the move the downhill slide has accelerated.

I was diagnosed with glaucoma and my sight is rapidly becoming worse and worse. It has gotten to the point i'm actually afraid to drive.

In addition, my blood pressure has gone through the roof and in spite of medicatin and yet more medication, which i can't afford, it refuses to come down. It is still averaging around 200/100.

I suppose discovering my ex-wife had canceled my health insurance two months earlier after incurring over $1,000.00 in medical bills did not help my blood pressure.

One shining point in the last half year was the acquisition of another .358 Win BLR. I got it because a friend was buying it and got into a bad bind. So I bought it and will sell it to him when he gets his ducks lined up again. If it doesn't happen, I've a rifle I like at a very good price. If only i could see well enough to make good use of it!!

Now to cap off the year, my Mom and I are sitting on pins and needles awaiting the results of a breast biopsy she had Thursday.

iIf 2010 is no better than 2009, I'm going to find a cave and hide.

Sorry this sounds so blasted whiny, but the events of the year and my health problems have made me rather bitter at times and I'm worried half to death about Mom.

Watched my youngest graduate from Air Force in May

Rode the Blue Ridge Parkway and the NC Outer Banks on my Harley, also in May

Caught a bunch of Stripers at Texoma in June, and again in October.

Rode my Harley from Fort Worth to Salina, KS to Denver to Alamagordo, NM and back to Fort Worth. Over 2000 miles in under 48 hours, in October.

Took a nice 10 point Kansas buck in December

Hand surgery, 5 days ago.

I racked up my 31st year of marriage to my first wife.

We had a banner year in my dept at work. I hope we can be as busy this next year.

Got my daughter thru here first semester of grad school

Killed my first squirrel with a flintlock smooth bore

Bagged a couple of more deer.

And I am fixing to go on my annual Pheasant hunt this next weekend.

I managed to end the year here with over 10 ricks of seasoned firewood, to make the winter and then some.

Lived through a pretty rough Ice Storm, and got by without electricity for over 11 days

Bought and traded for several guns, and I still have a couple comming. They are Custom Flintlocks.

Rat holed a little money, which is a challenge, with my wife not working, and also paying for her heath cost, and daughter's grad school.

Discovered I was mildly Diabetic, so I have been eating somewhat better, and lost 15lbs, but I need to loose a lot more. I guess that is a little wakeup call for me, but dam I do love my cokes and pastries, hopefully I this next year I will get in the habit of eating smarter, and excercising more. And I have seriously considered throwing this computer out the door. :D

Work, work, work!

Turned this;

We had others this year but this one was the most fun. Home owner is a hunter and
shooter and wanted a "Man Cave" for his family room.
I thought I had a finished photo but must not have taken one.

Spent just about every weekend working on one of the rental houses that was
stripped down to nothing by the previous tenant.
Still be working on it if it wasn't for all the help from Blondie and the boys!
