The review of the Mossberg 464 was basically good. It scored an 8 out of 10 and was described as utilitarian. However, everything I've read online has said the 464 was junk and to stay away from it. Has Mossberg corrected the problems with their levergun?

Just finishing it up. The Savage articles, both rifles and cartridges are good. Don't read much about them anymore. But I suspect prices just went up on the 99.

I like the addition, bought mine at Walmart. But the lead article about the halo-sight was off base. The author talked about scopes not helping accuracy of a good shooter with good vision and average 19th century rifleman being able to make clean kills to 400 yards. I though Louis L'Amour was the only one who wrote about 44-40, 400 yard shots. Scopes help. Not only do they help bad shooters, they help all shooters. Scopes have too many advantages. It's been a week since I read it so I'm kinda para-phrasing.

Well, you got to remember, it's a gun rag, and those writers get paid by the manufactures to write those articles.

I picked up mine at the Books-A-Million store. They have a rather large magazine rack, and carry the Hodgedons annuals as well.

Reading Peirces article on the '95 Marlin - its stronger than most loading manuals would lead you to believe.

Article reviews aren't my thing, but briefly:
The author is Stan Trzoniec. Allowing for ads, introductory large type and half-columns, the article is about 6 1/2 pages long, filled with lots of photos showing the rifle's lines and features, including a pistol-grip model, and how "the lever hugs the wood"; the finish; and so on.

Specifications are given for the test, including the info on the Leupold scope used; the fact that .243 and .308 Win calibers were tested; other caliber models available; other stats such as barrel length, O/A length, weight, finish, price, etc. The trigger pull is described.

Article predictably touches upon the benefit of having a detachable magazine - spare in pocket, shows pointed rounds loaded.

The author talks about no external safety; "Instead, there is a half-cock position..." and how the hammer tips forward as a safety feature. He shows how the "breech end of the barrel is notched to accommodate the bolt"; shows how the takedown version fits into a case measuring less than 24 inches...and so on, including how the action is unconventional, which combines a set of gears and a rack-and-pinion mechanism; and how the bolt has five flutes that mate with recesses for a smooth operation without binding.

Perhaps if I write more, I am infringing upon their copyright. The article is quite informative and (at least in my layman's levergun toter opinion) worth the effort of obtaining the magazine; even if it is an "industry sponsored" publication. I have always been fascinated by the Browning BLR, and if funds permitted, would definitely grab one now - it hooked me.

Found one at my local Safeway of all places. I was surprised to see that there are many articles that were of interest to me as well as very informative and worth the price as a compact reference source.
