MOVIES - If You have the chance...........Don't !

Post by Bullard4075 »

See the movie "No Country For Old Men ." Just a lot of killing and no ending.
What the writer was trying to say totally escapes me and everyone I know who has
seen it.

Bullard is correct. We rented it and it wasn't worth the money we spent.
I had forgotten it so I had to go to IMDB to remind myself. A totally forgettable waste of time.

I saw no point to it either.

It's a different type of story to be sure. The point of it is simple. Unlike TV, where things are nicely wrapped up in a little package in an hour, and the guy with the white hat wins, in real life a lawman very often just gives it up when he gets too tired or broke down to do it anymore, and the world is no better or worse than when he started. It does NOT give ya that warm fuzzy feeling at the end....

Well I'll go against the grain as well and admit I enjoyed it too.
The book as well.

My understanding was that the fight between good and evil men is never ending and in modern society it seems that
evil often wins no matter how hard we fight.

I saw that another one of Cormac McCarthy's books "The Road" has been made into a movie. Looking forward to that.

I didn't like it at first, but after thinking about it I've changed my mind.

Reminds me of the opening scene of the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly where Angeleyes kills the man and his kids, then goes back and kills the man who payed for the hit telling him "Once I'm paid for a job, I always see it thru".

Unfortunatley there are people like that out in the real world. I was reminded of it last weekend here in Oklahoma. A FATHER AND SON went and picked up a stranger at a bar and then took him out, stabbed him and slit his throat. All because the son wanted to "vent some anger" on someone. The crazies are out there. Luckily the guy lived.

I kept thinking that pretty soon I would enjoy it, well, pretty soon just didn't get there for me.

I'm one of those folks who has to watch a movie multiple times and 'digest' what I've seen.

I didn't care much for it the first time I watched it. Didn't seem to make sense.

I sat on it for a few months and then watched it again. It was MUCH better the second time.

Definitely not a 'feel good' movie, and certainly thought provoking.

I had high hopes for that book, thinking it was in the same vein as "Unintended Consequences", "Patriots" and "Light's Out" -- boy, what a disappointment!! It certainly didn't deserve the hype!

I thought it poorly written, dreary and depressing, unimaginative and uninspired, etc...just a bad book all around. I will NOT be spending any money to go see the movie. As it was, it wasn't worth the gas it took to go to the library and sign it out and return it!!

I will have to say that I enjoyed No Country for Old Men. The ending was not satisfying in the traditional sense, but I take pleasure in the Cohen's attention to detail and ability to capture local color and proper use of the vernacular in their movies. I really enjoyed Fargo as well even though it was a very dark movie. Their comedies are just as good. O' Brother Where Art Though and Raising Arizona are two of my favorites.

That's interesting.

I found his style interesting and unusual and the book dark and kinda unsettling. The ole good vs. evil thing again.
I'm going to have to read it again. I'll have to check out the titles you mentioned too.

I've always found it interesting as to what moves one person really annoys another.
The Boss Lady and I "debate" about what was a good movie and what isn't.
We went to see Quentin Tarentino's new movie last weekend.
She hated it but i was loving it!

Go figure :D

I liked no country for old men. I think the message is that we think we have a leg up on the past the future can creep up and blind side us. At the start of the movie When tommy lee jones was talking about the "Old time" sheriffs not even carrying guns relates to his dream where his father was waiting for him at the campfire, he like his father had done before had been a victim of the times.

Howdy,

I saw the movie about the same time I discussed it with a friend who had just read the book. A lot of things were explained in the book that weren't in the movie. The one thing I picked up on was that the bad guy was described as a force of nature without a consciousness. Just plain bad evil. No beginning nor ending, just there!!

With that I enjoyed it, and it answered the questions that the movie had left me empty with!

I liked it, more for atmosphere than any message, but it was entertaining to see a movie with all those twists and turns and interesting how the ending was not your typical feel-good Clint Eastwood resolution (as much as I like them).

Leaves it open for a sequel.

I think the Cohens delivered on this one.

Ready.... HERE IS WHY the ending didn't make any sense to you....

Because the story didn't end when you thought it did.

Because the story wasn't about Luellen Moss.

The story was about Sheriff Ed Tom.

The "message" was that in real life the bad guys win, evil prevails and there are times when good men can do nothing to stop it.
Slow is just slow.

I thought the movies was a very well done and enjoy it. Part of it was because it was set and filmed in and near Sanderson Texas and I am very familiar with that part of the country.

What did it mean?

1. It means there are lots of very bad people today in the border drug trade.
2. It means that evil often does win out over good.
3. It means the Sheriff had indeed passed his prime and it was indeed "no country for old men".

While it may be distasteful to many, it smacked of real life on the Border these days.

Yes, but for all of that, it is still a beautiful place.
I guess the old timers remember the border when it was not so hostile, and that was a fun place to be.

She hears that a lot except when it comes to the arts. Movies, music, artwork we agree to disagree.

I like dark and twisted and she likes the cute and fuzzy bunny stuff!

oh well I guess I'll just have to put up with her :D
