38-40 and AA#5

Post by Kansas Ed »

I thought this might be of interest to some on here.
I emailed Accurate Arms with the following request last week:
Hello,

I am really just getting started using Accurate Powders, having used

other brands for over 20 years. Except that I have loaded AA#9 in the

454 since the mid '90's. I would appreciate any starting loads you

might recommend for the following caliber/handgun as I can find no

published recommendations on your website.

38-40

Colt SAA (Mfg. date 2008) 7.5" bbl

Bullet- Midstates Cast Plain Base 180 gr. RN (.401 dia)

(any recommendations for lighter, heavier or jacketed welcomed, though

my primary bullet will be 180gr Cast)

Powders requested: AA#5 and AA#7 and AA#9

Also request your opinion on which powder would be optimum. I figured

that #5 would be better for cast, and #9 would probably be to slow for

good results, would like to hear your input. If you feel that better

consistency would be offered by another powder in your lineup please

feel free to recommend which one.

I'm looking for velocities in the neighborhood of 800-850 fps, with 950

fps my upper limit.

Thanks,

Ed Henning
This is the response:
Ed,

We suggest our No2 or no5 as the best options.

Caliber: .38-40Win.

Barrel length: 6”

Powder: Accurate – No2.

Bullet weight: 180 grains.

Low Load: 5.4 grains (800 -875 Ft/p/sec)

Mid range load: 5.8 grains (900 – 950 Ft/p/sec)

Powder: Accurate – No5.

Bullet weight: 180 grains.

Low Load: 7.8 grains (850 -900 Ft/p/sec)

Mid range load: 8.6 grains (925 – 975 Ft/p/sec)

NOTES:

It’ important to note that SAFETY is our prime concern therefore we strongly recommend.

1. TO ALWAYS BEGIN LOADING AT THE RECOMMENDED MINIMUM “START” LOAD.

2. If at all possible, measure the velocity and correlate with our data.

From those of us that love the 38WCF, thanks. I don't use that powder, but it's good information to store.
