OT: informal poll -- sit or stand to reload?

Post by Streetstar »

I am pretty new to the reloading game and have been using my pre-fab 4' Craftsman workbench so far. It is fine for little stuff -- but re-sizing some 300 Mag cases (and 45-70 would likely be the same way) showed me my setups limitations.

Contemplating building a version using the "NRA bench" blueprint as a guide, but am at a loss on whether to make it table height (for a sit down operation) - or work bench height (to stand - or sit on a barstool) -- curious how some of you gentlemen do it

current operation

With the way my old raggedy bench is set up I stand to weigh and dispense powder, but I sit for most of the other procedures.

I sit to reload, stand to cast and size/lube bullets. I'd sit for sizing bullets too, but that bench is too high, and I'm out of room on my reloading bench.

I sit.

The bench is high, and when I'm operating a press the stool upon which I sit is low. That way I get the best leverage and view of the goings-on with the presses, particularly the Dillons.

If I'm weighing powder charges I switch to a barstool so that I'm viewing things from above.

I've done both - either works fine. I didn't see that choice.

I sit when running brass into the die or seating bullets, but stand prepping brass (cutting to length etc) and to weigh powder charges.

My bench is high enough to stand but it all depends on how my back is doing. Sometimes I use a shop stool and sit.

I sit/lean back on a bar stool, except I usually de-prime with a Lee portable hand tool sitting on the floor while watching a cowboy movie. That is the ONLY part of reloading I'd do with distractions present, but it is pretty hard to mess that phase up, and case inspection happens again after cleaning later.

I stand to trim cases, clean primer pockets and to Prime (hand primer). These are done at another bench.
All the rest is done on my but. :D

I have always stood, but I have tried sitting, but I just never could get it right, where I could operate everything from the sitting position, it seems that my knee or leg would always be in the way of the press handle.

Bout 30 years ago when I started reloading I used to have a a stand-up bench and a tall bar stool, best of both worlds.
