Caliber/firearm wish list

Post by awp101 »

Let's throw out all thoughts of "need" and concentrate on pure "want". Practicality aside, what is the one (or maybe just a short list) firearm you would like to have in what caliber? It could be something never produced, it could be something historical, maybe just a flight of fancy.

I have a fascination with wildcats, especially the varmint and medium bore wildcats. I'd like a single shot (Cadet, rolling block or bolt) set-up for varmint and target shooting in one of the old varmint calibers (2R Lovell, .17 AI Bee, 6mm/30-30 Improved, etc.). A No4 MkI in 6.5-.303 (6.5 Epps?) would be fun as well.

What trips your sear?

Not exotic but I would like to have a 94 Big Bore in 356. I don't need it as I have a BLR in 358 Win and a 71 in 348 Win., but I would still like to have one. I would also like to have a 94 in 30-30 with I don't have at this time.

I'm pretty basic:

A Shiloh Sharps in 45/70...heavy 26-28" full octagon barrel with open sights, straight gripped fancy wood and a little German Silver on it.

The new Ruger Mini-14 in 223

other hankerings...
A USFA cap and ball revolver: Rem 1858 or Colt Dragoon would do. Always wanted an affordable USA made copy of one of these revolvers.
A Spencer Rifle from the Civil War

I WANT(correction: wanted, somebody got a deal) that sharps that Cable has(had) for sale but don't(didn't) have the money.

Other than that, I'm probably gonna be picking up a lightweight commander in 45acp(or variant, not necessarily a colt) in the next couple months.

Narrowing it down to just one would be tough. I still have a few Winchester models I would like to add to the collection. I will need a .32-20 WCF leveraction pretty soon to go with the revolver I purchased from thunder50 here.

Anything? A Barrett .50 BMG semi-auto rigged out with all the bells and whistles. If these suckers survive the next few years (and by "survive", I mean being allowed to sell them to civilians) I'll be stunned. Meanwhile, prices are just going to keep skyrocketing...

Winnie '73 in 38 WCF, a Winnie '76 in 45-60. I'd prefer originals, but would take Uberti's. A Barrett 82A1 in 50 BMG would be a dream rifle.

:D Since it's a wish list....I would like a "Little Sharps" in .500 S&W Magnum with a 26" barrel or a 1886 Winchester (or copy) in .50-110, factory half octagon, half round, LW, 22" barrel, half mag, with a shotgun butt. Not too much to ask I think. Thanks, Tom

P.S. Also for S&W to bring back the 696, 3" barrel, 44 Special. I missed it the first time around..... :(

P.S.S. Also forgot a hankerin' for a small SxS double rifle in .32-20 built on a .410 size frame :)

I've been wanting a Remington Model 788 bolt action rifle in .30-30 for some time. I located one last Thursday. Now all I've got to do is talk the guy into selling it to me.

The one firearm on my short wish list would be a Winchester 1886 full rifle, octagon barrel with full length magazine, in 50-110, NIB ~and~ a case of 1000 factory loaded Winchester cartridges like they sold back then.

Then I'd have something worthy of hunting with on 86er's ranch.

Want to have my 1886 Browning High Grade rifle re-chambered to 50-110. Want to have my BLR 300 Winchester Mag converted to a 458 Winchester Mag. Want a FA 97 in 22 Mag with a 4 1/4 inch barrel. I don't need any of them, but what does that have to do with anything.

A Contender pistol in .25-35 has been on my 'want' list since 1973 or so, as I made up a list of the SIX firearms I just had to have eventually. Still on the list when I was making a list of The Twelve, and so on. Don't need one, and don't have any other .25 calibers, so probably won't ever get one.

A Ruger No.1 in .444 Marlin. Got one in 7mm Mag years ago, and I'm not likely to 'need' a .444 in one any more than I 'needed' the 7mm.

A 10mm Auto - too powerful for most real 'needs' as a CCW gun (plus I don't want to go deaf if I ever had to discharge the thing), and no real advantage in my mind over a .44 Mag in a hunting situation.

I'd like a single-shot little bolt rifle the size of a .22, but chambered for .38/357. I think that would be really handy for small game, and have a little extra punch when needed.

Mine would be a custom built winchester 92 in .256 win mag. It would be a "short rifle" configeration. A half round, half octogon barrel, a longer pull stock of fancy wood as I am big, a 4 leaf fold down rear sight, a additional tang fold down peep, and a carrying strap or sling.
I once had a martini built up in .256, a ruger hawkeye and presently have a barrel in contender for it. It is one heck of a nice cartridge! I like what I call a "sweetheart" rifle and that would be it, for me! I seen a similar built up one something like it before, but I had the idea before that one. In all truth, I really havent compared the ballistics between the .256 win mag in a rifle as opposed to just getting a old 25-20. What do you guys more up on ballistics think?
I know I would have to use round nose bullets of course. I also have been keeping my eyes open for a old marlin 62 in .256 win. I ride and explore a lot with a quad here in the boonies of utah, and would be takeing that pet with me. I have plenty other rifles, but just like something "different".

note: I googled it and chuck hawks claims it gives about another 500 fps mv over the 25-20! What do you guys think? I wouldnt use it on deer, but I think it would be a good self defense cartridge too. I have dies and have reloaded for it many years ago.
