The Simple Things...

Post by Old Ironsights »

I've gotten inordinately (re) interested in Slingshots of late.

I really think that their use is virtually a lost art.

How many Leverkids these days learned how to silently whack squirrels/bunnies/(feral cats?) etc with a good slingshot before getting their Cricket?

Making a Bullet Trap to catch cast Round Balls from a Slingshot is not a big deal and you can practice all year long since slingshot range is generally around 20ft or less anyway.

And lest people think that these are toys...

That .490 roundball hit the scrap oak frame around my target box at 20ft...

I remember the old wrist rockets. Those things were accurate and powerful. I've been thinking about getting one for my BOB. A good survival tool. And, there's lead free ammo all over the place if'n your in a place you can't shoot lead. :D

That wan't from a wrist rocket. That was from a regular-old Y frame called the "Chief AJ Quick Point".

Weighs 3oz. The wrist brace really isn't necessary if you are shooting "finger-style" - even with the Black "heavy" bands.

Edit: Oh... and unlike the wrist rockets - even the folding ones - the Quick Point is actually pocketable.

I plan on carrying mine all the time for use on Crows...

I've been saving/scrounging old ball bearings for wrist rocket ammo for a long time. I've been without one for many years, I should do something about that.

Thanks for that link OI. I have been wanting to get a slingshot but couldn't bring myself buy one from China. Good to see these are made in the USA. I am gonna be ordering up one(or 3) of those. Indeed...how I started out when I was a wee lad roaming the woods of Flagstaff, AZ. It's actually the only weapon I've fired in self defense. My friend and I were shot at while walking a field with our sling shots....a group of teenagers with 22 semi-auto weere shooting at us from a car. My buddy was hit in the legs but at 100 yards his thick pants stopped the bullets...only recieved enormous welts on his shins. After he went down I actually returned fire but they were about a hundred yards away driving as fast as they could. And so went the innocence of childhood.......

Check the bands at least semi-annually... they will rot & be useless...

BTW... the "Chief AJ" that that brand is named after does Put & Take Phesants with a Quick Point...

Pretty wild.

Good point Old Iron Sides...

is there any preventive maintenance or storage method that would extend the life of the bands?

I don't think I've ever been with out a sling shot.

The one I hae now is made by Barnett. Diablo I think.
Thing is deadly. hit a runnin' rabbit at the end of the drive last summer with a
.375 RB. DRT!

Lots of fun. Used to mortar in M80s when I was a kid. Wonder I have
any fingers left!

Those wouldn't happen to be the RBs that fit the dueling pistols would they? ;)

Probably. I have an old Spanish .36 and '51 Navy that shoot those too. Need some more
now that I think about it. Probably only have a dozen left.

I used to have one, too.

We used to find pig iron balls, about 1/4" in diameter, around the train tracks. Apparently that's how they ship iron, in bulk, in open cars, and as the cars get jostled some of the iron balls bounce out. I would fill a bag of these and they made grrreat slingshot ammo.

These days you'd be arrested for having 'armor piercing ammo' for your slingshot!

I used to use catalyst balls (ceramic balls, the refinery used to just dump them on the ground before EPA) about the size of standard marble, they were fast and accurate. Did the job on squirrels and rabbits.

Taconite pellets. Used to find alot of them by the rr tracks in Duluth and Two Harbors. Remember the Herer's catalogs. They had about 2 pages of wristrockets and slingshots. Even talked about how you could kill deer with one! Wished I had saved 1 or 2 of those old catalogs.
30/30 Winchester: Not accurate enough fer varmints, barely adequate for small deer; BUT In a 10" to 14" barrelled pistol; is good for moose/elk to 200 yards; ground squirrels to 300 metres

the big bore sling shot is the sling, and the artillary version is the staff-sling. need to scale up for the entire tribe to be involved...

http://slinging.org/

the weapon that David used to kill Goliath
might come in handy in the near future
gets right thru security and can double
as a garrot

http://northernelectric.ca/medieval/sta ... fsling.htm

this turns your hiking staff into a long range stand off or closer-in big bore chucker. works on the same principle as the trebuchet, but hand powered. same leverage as the atlatl. a mob armed with these could chuck half-bricks up, up and away. kind of a mortar or light artillary round. I bet the original crews were pretty accurate with them.

David did not kill Goliath with the sling. He just knocked him down/out. (percussit Philistheum in fronte et infixus est lapis in fronte eius et cecidit in faciem suam super terram)

He killed him by lopping the bug guy's head off with his own sword. (tulit gladium eius et eduxit de vagina sua et interfecit eum praeciditque caput eius videntes autem Philisthim quod mortuus esset fortissimus eorum fugerunt)

Don't make be break out the Hebrew...

That said, I have made/played with a Greek Sling. Definately a good way to lob heavy rocks into a crowt/hit big objects.

I carry a sling and my bought one for my son and brother. It travels in my truck at all times unless I'm in the woods. Hangs from my rearview mirror. I'm getting pretty good with it as far as distance and power. I have even had some near misses with birds in flight. I really enjoy playing and using it.

I have a wrist rocket and a foldable wrist rocket knock off. I might try one of the chief slingshots. I think they are invaluable in hunting situations. I used the sling in texas to get some bovines moving for a shot. I would think lobbing rocks in canyons to get a muley up would be one of the uses. having a slingshot is a great way to suppliment the pot without making noice. goes hand in hand with hunting, archery and outdoor living
