Another cartridge question

Post by Otto »

How about this: what cartridges have been introduced since, say, 1960, that are genuinely unique or original ideas.
What new cartridges do not replicate the performance of an existing cartridge.
What new cartridges fulfill a purpose that either was not already being fulfilled, or could not have been fulfilled by working with an existing cartridge.
"...In this present crisis, government isn't the solution to the problem; government is the problem." Ronald Reagan

"...all experience hath shewn, that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable, than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed." Declaration of Independence

The .338 Marlin Express.

It was said to have been based "loosely" on the 376 Steyr, but that's even a stretch.
It does not replicate the performance of any existing levergun cartridge.
It fulfills the purpose of true long distance big game hunting (200+ yards) without having to aim a foot high.

I don't believe so; brokem down the design elements are a case of maleable metal, internally or externally primed, separating projectile. Cases have been rimmed, unrimmed, rebated & belted long before 1960; bottle-necks, straight & tapered walls used prior to 1900. An arguement could be made that even caseless ammo is a derivative of the paper cases from the percussion era (design criteria of having the "case" be consumed in the firing).

.40S&W
It brought the 9mm to a usefull level of power and still allowed the use of the double stack mag in a handgun that is still compact enough for concealment and fits the hands of most shooters well.

357 sig. Allows a cartridge with power similar to the 357 mag (not quite...) to be utilized in a compact auto.

I really can't think of a single round that would make much difference. All we have done is re-invent the same mousetrap, but now days we use stamped and plastic parts, instead of milled parts, and Walnut, to launch that new wizbang of a shortmag down range.

Rifle scopes are probably better.

+1 for the 40s@w. the leverrevoulutin cartridges extended the range of tube fed lever-actions,other than those, all else were pretty much duplicating something we all ready have.
