Even up here in Canada you can't get by with only one favorite. Mine are 22 lr, 22 hornet, 30 wcf, and 356 wcf. In no particular order, it depends which rifle calls out when the safe is opened.

.22 LR - first cartridge I ever fired, and still my favorite. Cheap, accurate, and just plain fun. Can't even begin to imagine how many thousands of these I've shot over the years.

.44 Magnum - the round that got me into reloading. Flexible and powerful.

.45-70 Government - what can I say? If you shoot it, you know why! :D

I have plenty of different calibers that I shoot, but one or more of these calibers seem to make the trip no matter what else goes to the range that day

Handgun:
.22LR - shoot all day long for under $50 in ammo cost, what could be more fun?
.32ACP - just a fun shooting round IMO and some of the new self defence loads make it almost worthwhile.
.357 Mag - load it up, load it down, it's fun all around!
9mm - like the .32ACP, SD rounds have come a long way and it makes a nice, concecalable package

I've recently become enamored with the 10mm but I can't say it's a favorite...yet.

Rifle:
.22LR - see above
.22 Hornet - Fun, mild recoil and report and did I mention fun?
.357 Mag - same as for the handgun selection
.44 Mag - same as above

In this order:

44 Spl.
32-20--Its a toss up between this and 44 Spl. for #1
45-70
30-30
38-55

These cartridges, along with most of the BP cartridges and other low pressure rounds are lots of fun to shoot. The guns they came in really "stir the soul". I believe most of us here have "been there and done that" with the 7 mags, 300 mag, etc., but now find these bolt guns at the back of the safe--------------where they belong until they are needed for the next American Revolution------------------------------------Sixgun

ahh, breathing room:

.22lr - fun, reasonable cost, compact, effective, accurate and the only caliber I own that I can hunt limb bacon and rabbits with.

.357/.38 - hard to beat a J-frame for ccw, and it(.357) makes a darn good deer round to 100 yards or so, and the .38 (if legal) could be used as a .22 would. my current favorite woods walking (no bears) and self protection round.

.44mag - first pistol I ever owned was a SBH in this round. Loved it ever since. currently don't own one though.

45-70 - if you have shot one, then you know why.

.375 H&H - I have owned one and if I had an opportunity to use it more, I would still own one. I think its the one rifle/one world of hunting type deal.

470 nitro - who doesnt want to have a double rifle in this caliber. I would give my left arm for one but then i would not be able to shoot it. Will never have a need for one but where does that fit in when you want one so bad.

I replied to the other thread that my favorite handgun cartridge is the 45ACP and my favorite rifle cartridge is the 6.5x55 Swedish, with the 30-06 a close second.

The 45 ACP is my favorite bacause I was steeped in a tradition of 1911 shooting, and spend my hitches in the USMC and USMCR as an armorer working on 1911A1s. Looking at and holding one of those stubby, big-diameter rounds makes me all tingly.

The 6.5 Swede is a wonderful small and medium sized game cartridge with incredible inherent accuracy potential and very low recoil. I've never fired a rifle chambered for this round that I didn't like. Some of the fastest whitetail kills I've made were using an old sporterized Swede Mauser. Same for some of the tightest groups I've ever fired.

That said, I like these other cartridges as well:

357 Magnum -- A very versatile, all-around handgun and light rifle cartridge.

9x19 or 9mm Luger -- Ubiquitous handgun and SMG cartridge; I have a Colt 1911, a Star B, a S&W 940, Ruger SP101, four P-38s, an XD9, three Browning HPs, two Beretta 92s, two semi-auto Uzis, a S&W 76 SMG, and a Sterling Mk4 SMG in this chambering.

9x18 Makarov -- Wonderful little round in a wonderful little handgun.

44 Special -- see 357 Magnum.

223 -- Ubiquitous small caliber centerfire round, I use it in ARs and AKs.

32-20 -- A fun little old cartridge that I enjoy shooting in a converted 310 Cadet, a Marlin 1894, and a couple Uberti SAs and a S&W Hand Ejector.

30-30 -- The cartridge designation says it all.

375 Win / 38-55 -- The 30-30 on steroids. Fun to shoot, excellent performer on game.

308 Winchester -- Another ubiquitous round, I use it in FALs, M1As, and a couple boltguns.

7.5x55 Swiss -- with a K31 carbine, it's another inherently accurate rifle/cartridge combination.

45 Colt -- Almost as fun as a 45ACP; very versatile with a wide range of loading options.

45-70 -- See 30-30; for me, the 45-70 (and 45-90) represents as close as one can inexpensively get to shoulder-fired artillery without spending $ thousands for a 50 BMG or getting into crew-served weapons. Another incredibly versatile cartridge with a wide range of loading options depending on the firearm from which it will be launched.

As a cartridge, sans gun:

#1 45 Long Colt: Its compact and just so versitile, from mild to wild.
#2 375 H&H AI: Just something neat about old belted African cartridges. Has interesting recoil, more of a big push than a snap. It also is flat shooting and extremely versitile.

Runners Up:
358 Winchester: An improved 308!!!!
454 Casull: Hands down, the Biggest Bang in the smallest size.
460 S&W: Biggest Wow Factor!! Has muzzle blast like a cannon. Keeps me religious as I see Jesus every time I shoot it!
43 Mauser: So pleasant to shoot!! You know you shot something but doesn't hurt at the end of the day.
303 Brit: Still better than a 308 IMHO.
