Johnny, the unemployment is very regional at this time. Based on what I'm seeing (and I'm no expert of course) I expect it to expand nationally and affect everyone within another year.

In my area (central, rural Texas) things seem "normal" - unemployment levels are normal and if not for the national media's reports, you'd never know anything was up...

Seems like the press starts talking about it and bam it hits harder.
Makes you wonder if all the media coverage isn't behind the workings of the country's economy

Notified by my union rep yesterday that I may be on the chopping block.....tool and die maker, 10 years experience. Age 48, TERRIBLE back (5 broken/blown out discs/vertebrae), stuck with a house that will not sell in NE ohio which typically is depressed economically even when things are going good elsewhere. Will have to wait and see. Two bright spots: 1.) 2 former bosses at my old company both expressed interest in seeing me if I get laid off. 2.) I still have my current job...just not sure how much longer. When the Union rep specifically seeks you out to tell you to prepare for it...well....
Was hoping 2009 would be better for me on all fronts (not just economically)...looks like it is just a continuation of 2008.

Coyote Nose,

Good luck! I hear ya, man; around here, they're dropping people left and right. I think so far, Spirit is the only aircraft plant here in Wichita(the air capital of the world) to not lay anyone off yet this year. MY father in law is in tall cotton; he retired from Boeing, then hired on into the same position/pay grade, etc., in the same place when Spirit bought out that part of Boeing. I guess it's just Karma for not killing my mother in law.

Bubba,

I have been quite busy with no end in sight. Mostly hauling tankers to Prudhoe and head out tomorrow to haul some huge butt spool out to Ooliktok (oilfield north of Deadhorse). Looking foreward to running the haul road while weighing in at 135.000 pounds...NOT!!! Seems the North Slope is booming. Sure alot of cranes out there.

You may have to pack some long undies though and look for a deal on a beaver fur trappers hat. Check with the 302 in Fairbanks or BP/Arco for the North Slope.

Good Luck.

There is nothing in Wisconsin. I'm sitting in the middle of the state and even my small business is going belly up...in-country sharpening. Basically sharpen anything and everything via hand, no tools outside of a dremel, files and stones. Pretty much a jack of all trades, but sheesh, with my work experience (lots) no one is hiring and if you haven't worked in an office for 5 years, good luck chump.

Welcome to the fire BuckBall. The mid and upper mid-west have been hit very hard. The company I work for is headquartered in a little town a couple hours north of Detroit. Being in a company town stinks when the company isn't hiring - and is actively letting people go. I was there when it happened before, and swore I'd never expose my family to that kind of risk again, even if it meant not being in the rat race and achieving what I know I could (of course, this makes for a great excuse to avoid the rat race - a choice I am thankful I've made every day!). Being in an office right now though isn't going to spare anyone. Paper-pushers are getting the heave-ho pretty darn fast.

Friends of ours in that town just had a neighbor finally sell their house after it was on the market for almost 3 years. They got $60,000 less than they paid for it 15 years ago. It is a bloodbath.

Good luck out/up there!

I see a new crane up in the OKC area every week ... things are slowing down in OK.. I interpret that as a mixed picture .Oil work took a dump when prices went down early this winter.
There is still a fair amount of state jobs open.
Scale work is hard to find in OK... but it looks like we are still way ahead of the upper Midwest.

I see a lot more houses for sale than last year.

We don't seem to be getting much more play on this thread... is that because there aren't many more here that are looking for jobs?

I must say I have to wonder about all of the current POTUS's "hype" about unemployment - is it really going up that quick?

Perhaps it's the demographics of the leverguns membership?

It seems to me that a lot of our economy's ills are regionalized into the (forgive the political comment) most socialistic of states - California, Michigan, Wisconsin, Nevada. Florida too though - which is pretty conservative... they're experiencing a realestate buble there.

No play on this page cause there's nothing much out there anymore. Cessna gave me my 60 days last month. I'll go out with my head held high at the end of March. Lots of people to vouch for my performance and work ethic, but even the inside tracks I had at other companies are worried for their own jobs. I'm willing to separate temporarily (up to a year or so) from my family and do the long distance thing for awhile, but I don't see an economy right now supporting the overhead of Manufacturing or Quality Engineering that I'm in. The gun industry is still headstrong, and government is getting bigger. There's where the new jobs are right now.

I was laid off the 13th of February, a Friday  , in a company wide downsizing after nearly 10yrs with the company. It might be tough for a 56yr old like me, living in the sourthern part of Illinois to do much good, there is not a lot around here right now and as much as I dislike Illinois relocating is not much of a option either. I have spent the bulk of my adult life working as a welder/fabricator or as a foreman over these operations. The last 3-4 years I was promoted to Production Control Coordinator and had a desk job. I've also had limited experience with carpentry, plumbing, electrical work and others. I hope something turns up.

Sorry I didn't think of this earlier. Several weeks ago while eating lunch in Columbia SC I picked up one of those free local newspapers. There was an article about 180 jobs at Fort Jackson that includes many civilian job needed to be filled. I thought I saved the paper but couldn't find it or the article. I did a gooogle search and found this http://www.thestate.com/154/story/662745.html. Hope it helps.

A little bit of all of the above.

While I'm still employed and will be until bad business practices I have no control over drive my dad's company/him into bankruptcy (75%+ chance by the end of the year) it's a tough row to hoe when you are/must be the Sole Provider (disabled spouse) and need to make a minimum of $36K just to be $5K in the hole every year ...

I've been "looking" since I graduated from uni in 2000 at age 33.

In my case, what it comes down to is I have to find a job that is either within an hour's drive of where I am that makes at least $40K, or I have to find a job somewhere else that will relocate me and make me $50K just to make up the difference what with the medical issues and all.

Couple that with a resume that is better suited to a 20 y/o ("experience" wise) and I'm looking at a pretty bleak period when the bankruptcies are done.

Maybe I can convince my inlaws to let me have a tenant farm up in Minnesota...

At my previous job the company closed Dec 2007 and I got hired a couple weeks later in a completely different field - security guard at $9.90 p/hr and still at it. I was gonna try something else but I'll hold tight for a while.
Before that I was in Computer hardware operations - IBM 3800 Laser Printers, Microfiche production both wet and dry, Optical disk media storage; StorageTek 9410 Automated Tape Storage Systems and later Virtual Tape Operations using JES3 computer commands and working knowledge of JCL. Five Mainframe systems and 3/4 million tapes big. All this closed down Dec 2001 with 23 years with the same phone company, sheesh I could have retired last year with thirty years!

I guess we should all be grateful that we are employed with anything decent at this time. And I think more hard times are to come = our "leaders" just borrowed $1trillion from the fed to inject into the economy... and hopefully cause inflation. Yes, hopefully cause inflation.

I am afraid it may work better than they want. Fools.

Please keep up the sharing of job availability where you see and find it. You never know when it will make a connection.

Well, just got to join the club today! I had moved companies two years ago because I thought bigger was safer! After telling us at the national sales meeting that all layoffs were done after they went round one in December, I got the call to go to a plant in Medina and I got the news I was done after working very hard the last two years. I was 17th in sales volume of 88 salesmen for the year last year--- with the states of Ohio and 1/2 of Pa. Then I got the eastern 1/2 of ky and lost western pa this year and was #2 salesman in my region when I was axed. The company went for seniority not performance in these hard times. Hope it pays off for them.

Heard word from a fellow shooter yesterday, that in the next few months, INL (Idaho National Laboratory) needs to hire 50 security folks. This is in Southeastern Idaho -- you can go to http://www.inl.gov and hit the Careers link. He said the job postings aren't up yet, but he told me to watch that site every day for the next good while. He claimed 50-60k/year pay range.

Security clearance will be a help.

I checked their careers site just out of curiosity and there was nothing about this - perhpas hasn't made it to their web site yet?

That sounds like a good opportunity for those in the area!

They do have a bunch of engineering and specialized sales/business development (alternative energy) available!

That's a very pretty part of the country out there - not that far from Grand Tetons National Forrest.

I have been reading this thread now since last year. It’s depressing as all get out. And I’ll bet it’s only going to get worse.

I haven’t worked in a while. Not since I fell down the stairs and messed myself up. Doctors say I should qualify for disability, but the government doctors say otherwise. I was able to walk in and talk to the guy so I’m not in bad enough shape. Personally I’m not sure I agree with my Dr, I think all I need to do is loose some ( a lot ) of weight. Not easy for me.

Now, all my life I’ve tried to get good jobs. I’ve never wanted any fly by night blow off jobs. I always tried to put my best face forward and be the kind of person the company wanted. And when I did get a job I did the best I could without kissing anybodies @$$. That I won’t do … again. Did it once and I’m still gagging from it.

So it comes down to the fact I need a job. That’s a long time fact. My wife can make just enough to keep the bills paid but not much more. We want to get out of IL badly. She can’t put enough back to do that.

So, it looks like I need a blow off job here for a while. Something that nobody cares about. Cos if somebody cares I don’t stand a snowballs chance of getting it.

What do I look for?

Any ideas?

PS; My wife is just about in the same place. She’s been doing pizza delivery for the last 7 or 8 years and her truck has about had it. I refuse to allow my Pathfinder to be used as a delivery truck because we NEED at least one good vehicle and delivery work will beat it to death.
My wife can’t put enough back to fix her truck. Right now we’re looking at about $1500 dollars worth of engine work. Mostly gaskets, crank pulley seal, timing components and valve stem seals. I have neither the tools nor the physical ability to do this. If it were an older American engine I’d do it, but it’s not and I’m not taking the chance of messing it up any worse than it is.

Add to this the fact that it looks as if the company that owns the pizza store is mismanaging it and may close it up in the near future because it’s not profitable, she is in the same boat.

Any ideas?

I wish I had a solution for you Joe. Just about everywhere I drive this truck the economy is down. I know that I'm not making the miles I once did as freight levels drop. The trucking industry feels the pain before everyone else it seems. My company is laying off mechanics and other support/office staff. Holding onto trucks a lot longer instead of buying new replacements. I no longer am allowed to drive the rig home and have to rent a car to get back to the wife. To make it cost effective I now have to stay out four weeks before going home. Tough on my marriage being apart from each other that long.

About the only place that seems to be doing alright are the larger cities in Texas. No state income tax down there and the cost of living is lower which helps.

I'll keep you in my thoughts and prayers. Hang in there.

The current economic problems haven't hit full force up here yet, and hopefully they won't.
Right now is the beginning of the seasonal peak employment time in Alaska and wages generally are higher than in the Lower 48. The cost of living also is higher in some categories (not all) but wages and salaries for the better jobs (usually) more than offset the higher cost of living. The one caveat I would mention is that there always has been a STRONG PREFERENCE given to those applying in person AND an additional preference given if you're an Alaska resident. My suggestion is that if you need work and you've ever wanted to live (and hunt and fish!) in Alaska, go up and take the chance. Introduce yourself to as many contacts in your field of work as you can before you leave. Even if they say they don't have a job for you or even answer, go see them when you get there and re-introduce yourself personally. Contacts usually lead to more contacts, and eventually to a job. I can't emphasize enough: Unless you do highly specialized work and have an exceptional resume, for Alaska employment you almost have to be there in person. So, you will have to spend some savings to get there, live in the Y if necessary while your looking, have enough money in reserve to live on, be willing to do "anything" that comes your way if you can't find employment in your field right away, and have enough money to get home if it doesn't work out for you. However, I'm a firm believer in taking risks when you want something badly enough, so if it were me I wouldn't worry about having enough money to get home. Consider Alaska is your home! Go up as a family if you have the resources, or send for them after you've secured your employment. The first run of king salmon is peaking in the Kenai River about now, the 2nd run of kings and the red and silver salmon runs will be starting soon, and hunting season for moose starts around the first of Sept. I dreamed big and went to Alaska in my mid 20s with not enough money for a return ticket and stayed nearly 30 years! If I can help you fulfill your Alaska dream, drop me an email. I've been away for a few years, now, but if I can help you I will be glad to. Victor

PS: FYI: The Anchorage newpaper is the Anchorage Daily News. In Fairbanks, it's the Fairbanks Miner IIRC. Check them out online. And don't forget Naknek and Dillingham in Bristol Bay where they are gearing up for the largest annual salmon run in the world right now. You don't necessarily have to work on the slime line. Are you a mechanic, an operator, an electrician, a book keeper/account? Contact the major Alaska seafood companies in Seattle: Bumble Bee, Trident, ask for names of other Alaska processors. If you are a hard worker and skilled at what you do, there are good jobs in Alaska whether you are white collar, blue collar or no collar. You just have to hustle and find them! I believe there always is a job (in Alaska) if you're very good at something, present yourself well, and are persistent. I've been in all 50 states and in my opinion Alaska is the #1 state for economic opportunity if a man is skilled, willing to work hard, uses his ingenuity, and is willing to take a risk...in other words, willing to step forward in the direction of his dreams!

Ditto that. This state loves hard workers who know what they're doing.

COL is a problem. Anchorage is on par with Seattle, and the rest of the state is much worse. The bush is downright outrageous. But you learn to adapt. One way I've kept ends together is by ditching the car completely. I go by bike everywhere, year round, in Anchorage. It's not as bad as it sounds since flying to Fairbanks or SE is the only practical way to go to meetings and the like even if you have a car. The shift workers on the slope also fly up on charters. Saves me a HUGE amount of money on insurance, car payments, fees, gas and repair bills.

The severity of the winters varies depending on the particular region of the state. Anchorage is actually pretty mild, with temps rarely getting less than -15 f. The big difference with the midwest is the length of the winter, which can be seven months solid of ice and snow. SE is more like Seattle or BC The interior is another story!

You can also live semi-subsistence even in the cities. As a resident you're able to dipnet and go for hooligan smelt in certain areas, which is a very cost-effective way of filling a chest freezer. Moose or caribou hunting is as well. Folks literally give away extra salmon. I snagged 15 lbs. of silver fillets for zero dollars last summer from a coworker who had too much to process. I brined it, smoked it and froze it. Three fillets plus some standard vegetables makes a week's worth of salmon chowder. You can often find people selling extra charter tickets out of Seward or Homer for under $200. They lowered the halibut limit but in the past I've gotten two halibut, three silvers, ling cod, and a variety of tasty bottom fish for the price of the trip. Trust me that's a LOT of fish. And it's nothing compared with an entire moose. Moose are a walking cornucopia.

And barring that there's always the intrepid adventure of hunting at costco for subsistence :D Let me tell you getting 150 lbs of stuff back the seven miles from the Costco on a bicycle is an adventure! Everything here is an adventure, actually. I could never leave now.

Joe,
I am going to be very honest and sincere what I am thinking/recomending of your problem.
First and foremost lets look at your ability to work. You really need to honestly step back and truefully access your physical ability. Can you work? What basis is your doctor thinking you are better off not working.(overweight/actual non-repairable serious injury etc./or mental issue)I know that question seems course but first you need to be very truethful. Now I am being honest, the weight issue is all mental in 90% of people. You seem very depressed and I bet you are eating excessively because of feeling bad about yourself.STOP TODAY.RIGHT NOW just do it, period.Eat only 1500 calories daily, providing your doctor agrees with this.(do it for your wife)
Here is the deal! The job market is all about presenting yourself like a package someone wants to buy.(personality/appearence/attitude)You stated you wont kiss BU##.
I say kiss BU## "a little".You have to anymore in this job market.I am not saying being grossly unreal or turning on coworkers but you have to come to a conclusion what acceptable BU## kissing is.
Unless you own your own Company(even then at that level, you also will have to kiss some BU## slightly if you want to stay in business)People can read people,if you show up very overweight/they ask about your last job,you say oh I have not worked in quite a while and presenting this kind of ho hum feeling and then the employer finds out about your injuries questioning your ability etc? That perspective employer will think Later for this guy?If you think you really can work and loss that weight start even with a less important job but treat it important. Its meeting other contacts where you impress someone who knows someone else etc.Its a tough world we are in today but if you just let yourself go to pot your hurting yourself and all you love. The Disability thing unless you are REALLY and I mean REALLY messed up I DO NOT recomend it.From what I have seen those that ARE NOT really messed up end up living a life that is much less fruitful.(always looking over your back,is the digital zoom camera(camcorder watching my every move)you get heavier
because of proving you CANT work etc.Is that living with you family?? So in a nutshell LOSS THE WEIGHT/PERIOD/DO IT.For yourself,YOU deserve it.Find ANY job right now(with doctors ok) and while doing that job well be working on a better one.Kiss a Little BU## and REALLY try mentally to be positive around people. That one person could be your next boss on the better job.
I hope you find the best life has to offer you and your wife!!!

Madman4570,

Well, you got me curious and I've been looking at things I've been eating and counting the calories. My bowl of cerial I ate this morning was over 300 calories. Oreo cookies are 160 calories for just three dinky cookies. Arrghhhh I'm gonna starve....... if I restrict myself to 1500 per day ............ I'll go patently loony. :o

Well, I've been told that's just a short trip for me so I guess we'll see what happens.
AS for loosing weight for my wife, well there's a story there I don't feel like going through.

As for kissing the south end of a north bound boss ........... NO. Like I said, I did that once and it still makes me vomit.

I'll be cooperative, business like, but my nose is not brown and will not become so. Well, maybe if I get back to the west and get some sun it might

Joe,
Just try this below,it will work I promise.
First dump the oreo cookies,It screws you up big time.Trust me what it does is raise your suger level with non nutritious food that only makes you hungrier.Throw that junk out.Its poison.
Example below:
Breakfast--1 cup raisin bran cruch/1 cup skim milk/1/2 cup frozed blueberries.drink with coffee or water or both.
Mid Morning Snack--1 good size apple or cup of lowfat cottage cheese or 1 cup lowfat yogart.
Lunch--11oz can of Tyson white chiken chunks(Walmart)serve with
large tomato/lettuce/onion etc.mix with 1 tablespoon kraft Real olive oil lowfat mayo or what I like Ketchup.
Dinner--1 CLIFF BAR and 3 celery stalks w/1 tsp of Peanut butter in each.
Also 1 Oz unsalted almonds. Drink 2 glasses of water or 2 cups of green tea.
Early Night Snack--Mix 1 cup lowfat cottage cheese with 1 apple.
Trust me mixing them tastes really good. After eating right for a couple weeks you will be amazed how sweet things like carrots taste.
Frozed or fresh carrots/green beans/broccoli cauliflower eat throughout the day all you want(but no sauces)example eat raw carrot but not the glazed carrots. This is just one days example.
If you eat/drink all that you will be full.
Now for exercise when you can with doctors ok.A thing I totally recomend and will last forever(and I mean that is the Schwinn Evolution Comp)They use these in your hospitals rehab centers
for people getting physical therapy. They are built like a tank and
works your legs/arms/gut yes gut when you intermittently sqeeze/tighten up your stomach part way through routine. The machine look so professional it is amazing.I bought one 10 years ago after using one for 3 months in hospital physical therapy after an ankle surgery.Everyone fights to get on one of those.(there about $600 but that unit will last a lifetime.Ours averages over 100 miles
a week on it for 10 years and only thing replaced is 2 9V batteries for the onboard computer.Once you get going on that then I will tell you how with just THE PERFECT PUSHUP for $19.95 and the Weider
power stretch Band $11.95 you can get toned/cut etc just as good as any weights. You can start so low/slow like if you are really heavy do girl style pushup but with these you dont go way down, you go only to where your upper arm angles with your forearm to make like a upside down L Even if you can do 1 girl style pushup thats the begining, and if you cant work on it till you can do 1.Lookup that Schwinn Evolution Comp and see// Also lookup the perfect pushup sold almost anywhere.I have about 2400Lbs of Olympic weights w/full framed weight cage and 4 cannondale mnt.bikes and honestly those couple things I mentioned above work you just as good.
If you want them to. Its all about choice--What do you want for your life. Change only happens when you begin.
Below is an example of the 2009 new price, but if you look around or get a new 2008 model it should drop 1-2 hundred.
I paid for ours in 1999 $578 so that price would be really good.
Make sure it is that model though only--Schwinn Evolution Comp

madman,

I'll print out what you just posted and give it to my wife. She is the one that buys all the food and cooks 99% of it.
However spending $600+ on anything is out. Will walk and do as I can, and when I can I'll get on my bicycle and pedal my ..... ummm rear end around town.

Joe,
OK Pal,Thats all I ask.Give it a try.
Right now you are 50% there just taking that first step.
You will see your appetite will decrease within 2 weeks.
Every day you should lose aprox 1/2 lb of fat.
I want you to look at a container of 8ozs of somthing.
That my friend will be coming off you daily.Dont even look at the scales for 2 weeks.Because of you drinking a lot of water/tea/coffee/
you still can lose fat but you will have some water weight that is not
a permanent thing. No Soda of any type, its all stuff.
If you really start eating this you will drop weight fast,
A older friend of mine did this last year following that type of
eating/doing some exercise and he lost 42lbs in 6 weeks.
He got off BP meds/his sugar levels went from prediabetic to normal.
He regained his sex life and he told me I saved his life.NO,NO,NO
HE SAVED HIS OWN LIFE !!!!!!!!!!!! HOW ABOUT YOU???
I THINK YOU CAN !!!

Joe, another bit of advice that I know can work is that when you get hungry between meals, go for a walk. You have a dog? Take the dog too. The dog will help motivate you to walk. Walking is a great way to exersize w/o pounding your joints and takes the hunger pangs away long enough to make it to the next meal.

When I needed to lose weight to qualify to go to Philmont with my son (national Boy Scout camp in N. NM) I followed the follwing regimine:

Breakfast: coffee and bananna
Lunch: one or even two apples or an apple and an orange
Dinner: "normal dinner" but used a smaller plate and kept the portions like my wife's - used her as a guidline

No beer ( I like beer ) and walk every day - as long a distance as you can manage.

If you do this, you will lose weight I guarantee. Slowly at first and then it will increase after the first 15 pounds come off - at least that's how it worked for me.

Have been walking a bit lately, oh my I forgot what pain feels like. Got a disk or vertebra that's out in the lower back. After about a block and a half that area is burning and screaming. Been able to do about 4 blocks or so at a time.

Can't drink coffee. It goes straight through me and I'd spend the day on the pot.
Been eating cereal for breakfast. No added sugar, just what's on/in it. Easier than cooking something. I've seen closets bigger than the kitchen in this house.

Will keep trying.
