what do you wear hunting in the rain?

Post by MacEntyre »

Levergunners seem to know a lot about how to stay dry... threads about good gear are all over this forum! I have not been satisfied with my poncho in the woods. I'm thinking of getting a waterproof coat. I don't need a warm coat... layers can provide that.

What do you recommend for hunting in the rain?

What works well when bow hunting in the rain? (ponchos do not)

Thanks!

In the cold rain/sleet I wear wool.
That which does not kill me has made a grave tactical error.

StormKloth from Cabela's. I got a $170 suit for $60 two years ago, when they had a end-of-the-year clearance sale.

Though, to echo WCF3030, lately I've had a fondness for wool. Wool keeps 75% of its' heating ability when it is wet. Tough to beat that, if you can get by the uncomfortableness of wet wool.

Find a light packable rain jacket on sale from Cabelas or someone. They claim to be waterPROOF, but they weep a little, they are good enough though over fleece or wool, and are a good windbreaker also. Just shove it into your pack and you'll hardly know it's there.
For pants, I bought a German surplus Gore Tex type overpant with suspenders from Sportsman Guide that works very well, is also windproof and weighs like nothing, and they're cheap.

For heavy rain, nothing beats my Commercial fishing foul weather gear, but that stuff is expensive, pretty bulky, and heavy.

I've been using one of those Austrian Army surplus poncos that are in such vast supply. Bought aboout a dozen of them. stashed them all over. Cabin, boat, back pack, trucks etc.

I saw that you precluded pnochos but I haven't had a problem sooting a bow or crossbow with one on. They're heavier and have
larger openings than the $2.00 cheapo's

A golf umbrella. :D

No serious. I did a first this year... early this summer I'd bought a large golf umbrella, I bought it to use as portable shade at shooting matches. It was in the trunk of my car, so opening day this year, in the rain, I sat out in the woods in my little short legged camp chair under this big giant umbrella. It worked great! 8)

I've been using The North Face gortex outerwear for about 15 years now for rain or snowy conditions. For the top, I use their Mountain Jacket (with their Denali polar fleece underneath), and for my lower half, the full North Face gortex pants with bib and suspenders (I think they're called the Mountain Pants). That way, I don't get snow up my back. Here's a photo of both the jacket and pants that I wore this fall while hunting and fishing. You can stand in a steady downpour or sit in the snow or on a wet log and stay dry.

Also, I can get blood all over both and it just washes out without a trace (and I've got both good and bloody while loading, gutting and skinning deer).

Ditto. Yes, really - packable camo lightweight rain anorak and the same surplus East German gortex OD green pants from SG.

The bucks come out when it rains... they've learned that its safer.

:D I love to hunt in the rain. I use only wool. Beagle wear, Columbia, Woolrich, Sleeping Indian, also military issue surplus. The best stuff is European (Swedish, East/West German, Danish). If you use synthetic or silk long underwear, the wool is very easy to tolerate. It is the best way to go in my opinion, quiet, warm and rugged. The new synthetic stuff works really well, but is noisy. My .02$. Thanks for listening, Tom

I have a slicker on the back of the saddle just in case I get caught, but I usually use a house.

Rain??? During deer season...??? In California!?!?!?! :D  :D  :D

But seriously...I have a nice lightweight unlined camo jacket from cabelas that I use in Alaska...where they do see some rain now and then. I also use milsurp BDUs. I tend to run warm so I dress in lightweight layers. Near the end of the season, I usually end up wearing short sleeve t-shirts its so nice and warm out here.

I wear a full length Drizabone and an Akubra for anything I do in the rain. Its neutral brown color and lack of shine would make you almost invisible if you stood next to a treetrunk.

My old army Gore-Tex jacket and wool. Maybe. Depends on how hard it is raining. It is funny, but some rains don't really get you as wet as you think they will. I've seen fox at 5 feet as well as deer still hunting in the rain. Great fun.
Sincerely,

Hobie

I wear an L.L. Bean anorak over my insulating layers and under my camo. It isn't technically rain gear, but it doesn't seem to rain hard enough while I'm out in the fall/winter to get soaked through.

[If it's raining I hunt out of a blind with a roof!]

Although I always wear only wool, I'm with Ted & leverdude - my pop-up blind or a tree umbrella over my $6 Baca-Lounger from WallyWorld.
